  1. awesome.
  2. Cora was, for the most part, the starting SS and Parnell was 5th in the team in IP yet Nymr leaves both off but finds room for AndyHandy & Dessens Cora's exclusion was intentional, i dont give points for attendance. Parnell deserves consideration because he was a serviceable reliever before being pushed into starting duty in largely meaningless games, i'll look more closely at him when i revise (which wont be at 2am on a sunday)
  3. No Thanks on Ankiel, his numbers last year sucked and we know he was juicing in the past, what if this is what he can do now that he's off the juice?
  4. I think we gotta go find some offense, ideally at second base Orlando Hudson? his offense is marginally better than what Castillo did last year, but i think he's much more likely to repeat it than Castillo. the defense is probably miles ahead.
  5. Given Martinez's still very young age I wouldn't mind at all if they 'blocked' him for 2010 by acquiring someone decent (I hear the Nationals just signed a decent outfielder for only 1 year at a bargain price, who was it again?...)
  6. wow. I'm not a huge LaRoche fan but thats dirt cheap for a player of his ability.
  7. where was Francessa on this??? clearly the surgery was conducted without the Mets' knowledge or Omar would have clued Fatso in on Monday.
  8. Rob Neyer wrote: The Pirates added Ryan Church on a one-year contract on Tuesday that will pay the outfielder a 1.5 million dollar base salary which could reach up to 2.8 million if all plate appearance-based incentives are reached thats a good deal for the Pirates.
  9. At least she's not marrying Allen Iverson. "How am i supposed to make my significant others better by marrying?"
  10. In order to answer the question "why?" you must put yourself in the mindset of the voters in 1996, not assume (as you do) that they were wrong because they didn't use the same basis for analysis you do. I didn't say they were wrong, I asked why it was unanimous, what isn't showing up in the stats that made him such an overwhelming choice when the stats paint a picture that i would have thought would lead to 5+ guys receiving first place votes.
  11. What am I not remembering about that year? He won the award unanimously despite 5 or 6 guys putting up comparable offensive numbers and some of those guys playing 15 more games than him. Did he save an old lady from a burning building? the OPS+ list from that year.. 1. Sheffield (FLA) 189 2. Bonds (SFG) 188 3. Bagwell (HOU) 178 4. Caminiti (SDP) 173 5. Piazza (LAD) 166 6. Gilkey (NYM) 155
  12. Will Sheffield be the first Marlin in the hall? I can't see what other hat he should wear instead. The numbers are all there I just have a hard time thinking of him as a hall of famer.

Irregular jutting that's a bit tougher to resolve in your periphery? I've seen a few LF/CF combos this past year-- home team included-- who seem to approach the edges of the wall recession with trepidation. our guys, when we actually have the same guys playing out there all year, will learn it. let the road team fear it.
  14. if he really is willing to take a minor league deal just give it to him, at the very least he can make the pitchers in Buffalo look better with his glove.
  15. i think moving in (and shortening) the fences would radically help the terribly obstructed views Thats an argument I can accept, but I don't trust the idiots who gave us obstructed views in the first place to make that determination. If someone independent could conduct a study and tell us that x% of obstructed seats would be better off if you moved the fences in to y dimensions I'd love to see that.
  16. sounds like fun, it would have given me someone to root for to beat the yankees or phillies this year.
  17. smg58 wrote: Is now a good time to mention that Tim Raines had a higher career OPS than Dawson? Tim Raines had a better career than Andrew Dawson, I'm at least going to concede that Dawson had a better peak which may (legitimately) sway some voters. The gap in vote% between them is alarming.
  18. RealityChuck wrote: I don't see Dawson as that bad a choice -- his numbers fit snugly among HOF players, and he played on some pretty bad teams almost his entire career, which hurt him. The fact that Blyleven and Alomar didn't get in has nothing to do with whether Dawson was a good choice. You're following the same logical fallacy as the people who refuse to vote for someone in his first year of eligibility. No, i'm not. Alomar (i'll use him and ignore trying to compare pitching/hitting at the moment) was better than Dawson, which does have something to do with whether Dawson was a good choice, because everyone who voted for Dawson but not Alomar made the rather indefensible decision to vote for a clearly worse player ahead of someone that they deemed not to be a good choice. You can draw the "line" of how good someone had to be to get into the HOF wherever you'd like, but when you say that Dawson is above that line and Alomar below it you've made a bad choice.
