  1. If Jeff broke laws I hope the authorities come after him. If not, I have very little use for MLB imposing discipline for things that have nothing to do with the game on the field.
  2. There should be a "start the year without a Lefty" option. The loss of the platoon advantage could be cancelled out by the improved pitcher usage that comes from not having one!

Well for one Harvey is the better player, but the fact that very few people seem to be panicking right now is a pretty strong testament to the organization that Sandy built. When Harvey went down you heard that this would push the Mets contention dreams back a year, there is none of that talk today thanks to the depth of the system
  4. don't get you started on an agreement that is mutually beneficial to two consenting parties? ok, sure.
  5. great dogs. decent women too.
  6. I suspect Dr Andrews is busy enough, and rich enough, that he has no need to create business for himself in that way.
  7. Sorry to see Wheeler go down, I thought he was really getting it together and about to become that 200-inning #2 starter we all thought he'd be. Thankfully Sandy didn't trade Dillon Gee for a bag of balls as requested by some impatient fans, so the Mets can still keep the prospects on whatever plan they were originally on. no need to hit the panic button folks!
  8. I don't find Niese all that objectionable, he's no Steve Traschel at least who pitched fairly well but would agitate the hell out of you
  9. Jeff McKnight made his big league debut in 1989 with the Mets and hit .233 overall with five home runs and 34 RBIs in 218 games. He singled in his final at-bat, for the Mets in August 1994 on the final day before a players' strike wiped out the rest of the season. I wonder how many players never saw the bigs again after the strike, and how that would compare to a typical season. did ownership blackball anyone? did marginal guys decide they needed to move on with their lives and get real-world jobs sooner then would typically happen?
  10. I don't think Lagares is one of baseball's elite players or one of the top 10 in the NL going forward even if the stats say he was last year. But I do think he is a good player and the only real knock on him is that his team doesnt have a leadoff hitter and is miscasting him in that role. Nobody would be complaining if the Mets had signed someone who could leadoff instead of Michael Cuddyer and Lagares was slated to hit 7th/8th. The Steroid Era is over. people are going to have to get used to the idea that there isnt a slugger playing every position any more. DEFENSE!
  11. Many things are possible with the Mets' multitude of talented young players. Reynolds could see time at SS and move to 3B in a few years for Rosario/Cechiani with Wright moving across the diamond to finish up his career... I would hope we don't keep Wright at 3B forever as a ceremonial statue long past the time he can fake the position the way certain other New York teams would have...
  12. I'm going with 87 wins
  13. i like the bold predictions. and i like Reynolds.

That's for sure. if they just wanted to dump the salary why isnt he gone already? if the Mets are so cheap why wasn't Murphy dumped for nothing? the Mets could easily have "justified" it by saying Herrera is ready. Maybe its because the Mets are actually holding onto their assets to use wisely? nah, that wouldn't fit your conspiracy theories.
  15. What are you waiting for? spring training? take a big swig of the koolaid and vote NOW!
  16. Rosario may be further than that and Dilson Herrera may have already dug his heels in at 2B by then, ain't it great to have options?
  17. batmagadanleadoff wrote: The point isn't so much whether Moncada will pan out or not, but that the Mets play in fucking New York City and couldn't get this guy even if they wanted to. And that the Mets can't get this guy even if they wanted to says about a zillion other bad things about this franchise. The Red Sox aren't a dumb organization; they're one of the best run orgs in all of baseball. The Mets couldn't get this guy if they wanted to? says who? they spent more than this on Michael Cuddyer. I didn't want Cuddyer, but paying so much money for him kinda shows their finances arent as bad as you like to think. And, get this, THE PLAN IS WORKING. the Mets farm system has gotten better each of the last 4 years or so and has gotten to the point where building a homegrown winner is very close to being a reality. Once some combination of Harvey/Wheeler/Syndergaard/DeGrom/Matz/Montero etc and the young bats at almost every position get to the 85 win level, which i think happens this year or next at the latest, the Mets can spend the money to add the missing pieces. this is a better plan than trying to be a late 80's Steinbrenner buying a championship.
  18. If the Mets want to join "the big market clubs" I'd rather they do it in major league free-agency instead of giving a record-breaking deal to an amateur who has never taken a swing against a big leaguer. I hope Moncoda sucks just to shut people who think $$$ will solve everything up.
  19. When they start playing exhibition games, you probably won't have enough fingers on your hands to count the number of pitchers that are gonna go down with injuries. one of which may even be on the Mets! i like that the Mets held onto Gee, you cant have too many pitching options. if a deal had shown up for a good bat then thats fine, but there was no reason to trade him away for an interchangeable bullpen arm or something like that.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Well, if he gets hurt, he'll almost certainly fail to hit righties. But you really want the Mets to go into the season staring Kirk Nieuwenhuis in right over him two days out of three? That seems like a perfectly viable fallback plan, but I wouldn't make that an opening strategy. His career platoon split looks pretty typical, with .101 difference. vs. RHP: .274 / .332 / .450 // .782 vs. LHP: .291 / .378 / .504 // .883 It was more pronounced in his third of a season last year, but that was more about killing lefties, not about failing against righties. He had better numbers against righties in 2013. my desire to start him against lefties stems from Mr. Duda's insanely bad stats against them rather than anything Cuddyer has done. I think his defense is going to be pretty bad in the outfield and the bat wont play out there, Niewenhuis will probably be his equal with defense taken into account but we'll also need some ABs for Mayberry or Den Dekker depending on who makes the roster. I could see RF starting the year as the position where a bunch of guys get the playing time, but they'll probably give Cuddyer at least the first 2 months to play every day based on his contract, though thats not what I'd want.
  21. I think he hits ok but gets hurt again. Kevin Plawecki comes up and makes the decision a tough one when d'Arnaud comes off the DL
  22. gets hurt in the 1st 2 months and is never heard from again as either Gee or Syndergaard make his return undesirable to management. alternatively, they trade him in june and eat half the contract to get a prospect back
  23. last year .253/.349/.481 in 596 PA. including a horrific .180/.264/.252 against lefties in 125 PAs This year the Mets wisen up and play him less against lefties, resulting in 550 plate appearences (he loses ~75 against lefties as he never starts against them and then picks up about 30 more as he is never benched against a righty) this results in a .260/.360/.500 overall line
  24. If the Mets throw him out there every day they'l deeply regret it as he gets hurt and fails to hit righties. give me .260/.320/.425 in only 100 games. if they're smart and dont play him in the damn outfield every day and use him primarily as the platoon partner for vs. lefties at first base, he hits .270/.340/.450 with a good line against lefties and more games played thanks to pinch-hitting (with less total at bats)
  25. smg58 wrote: He'll put up numbers a lot like the .289/.332/.403 that Murphy put up last year. And like Murphy, he'll be below average defensively for his position but not brutally so. This is pretty much what I expect as well.
