  1. I just finally had a chance to read Greg's transcript, and it was a lot of fun. I remember where I was that day too. I was driving around running errands and listening on my car radio. As the rally built in that last inning, I pulled over into a bank parking lot so that I could listen to the game without the distraction of having to drive without killing anybody. I've since moved, and don't drive past that bank very often, but whenever I do, I remember that wild pitch by Clontz to Piazza. Thanks for posting that!
  2. I found this articleon Baseball Prospectus because it contained a UMDB link. The article's author, Neil deMause, anticipates that the Mets will have new ownership sooner rather than later, which seems plausible to me. I think the Wilpons are going to be stubborn about hanging in there, but they can only do that for so long.
  3. The only game the Mets will be playing on October 27 is golf. As for Niese: 12-10, 4.05 ERA. 30 starts.
  4. Start by giving Jose Reyes $90 million.

Ashie62 wrote: what FA in his right mind would sign with the Mets if this suit is still out there a year I'm not so sure that will be a problem either. Ashie62 wrote: And the prick even knocked down Shea The Wilpons have achieved their dream of rebuilding Ebbets Field. They should take that as consolation as they pack up their things. And maybe they'll live long enough to see someone knock down Citi Field to rebuild Shea Stadium.

Well, you could argue that it's in the best interests of the owners, collectively, not to have a big mess in one of the larger markets. (I'm not sure how true that really is, but it's an argument that could be made.)
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: I can't get too involved in this stuff until we're within a Prince Fielder HR of what the facts are supposed to be. Me neither. I really only care about what happens on the field. This may have an impact on that, but I can't plunge myself into all these details. Too arcane for me anyway. I'm not one of the Wilpon haters (who are legion); I'm pretty indifferent to them. But if this lawsuit is going to go on for years (as it well might) then I'd prefer to see them sell their entire interest in the Mets. And I hope that Bud Selig (I hate having to count on him for anything) uses the "best interest of the game" to pressue them into doing just that.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I remember them! I expect that Mike Nickeas will be on the Opening Day roster, because of Paulino's suspension. He'll get into two games, one of them will be a start. After that, we'll only see him if someone gets injured, or after September 1. Or if Paulino sucks. I'm gonna say 45 big league plate appearances in 2011.
  9. I hope that when I'm Fred Wilpon's age, my face doesn't look nearly as mushy as his does now.
  10. This one is tricky. I'll say 90 starts at second base, 10 starts elsewhere, including 2 at third base. .275 batting average, 8 home runs.

  12. There were billboards for this movie all over Lisbon this past summer. I heard it was a fun movie. I might watch it when it hits cable, if it hasn't already done so.
  13. Watch it if you're curious to see a slice of film history, a time capsule from the 50's, and James Dean in action in one of only three films that he made. If you're looking for a terrific movie... maybe not.
  14. He has the same initials at Pat Mahomes, so I'll use Mahomes as a basis for my prediction. I'll take a little 1999 and a little 2000: 53 games, 94 innings, 5 starts, and a 3.68 ERA. (The ERA is from 1999, the other numbers are from 2000.)
  15. Some of the scenes were okay, entertaining in a kitchy way: the knife fight at the planetarium and the game of chicken at the bluff. But I couldn't muster up any sympathy for Sal Mineo's character. The first thing we learn about him is that he likes to kill puppies, and later he gets a gun and starts shooting people. Was I supposed to care about his fate? The scenes with Natalie Wood and her father were pretty laughable. He doesn't want her to show him affection anymore. The unstated reason is probably that he's made uncomfortable by her extremely perky breasts. She kisses him on the cheek and he reacts by slapping her. He really handled that poorly!
  16. Youngstown, Ohio. I remember when Darryl made that crack about Wally being a "little redneck." The followup was that Backman didn't know what the word "redneck" meant. (This was in the pre-Jeff Foxworthy era, I suppose.)
  17. Maybe that was my problem: I wasn't drunk or high when I saw the movie.
  18. Candlestick did have fake grass for a while there. I think they may have been the first time to ditch plastic for real grass.
  19. Watched this the other day, for the first time in many years.
  20. Maybe they were trying to be like Disney, where almost none of the characters have mothers, and those that do have to endure their deaths. Many instead have step-mothers, who are, of course, evil.
  21. Do you really think the Mets are going to win the division?
  22. A full year at Buffalo, and a good one. 3 starts for the Mets. He'll position himself to be in the Mets rotation in 2012.
