    I'm descended from a Brooklyn Dodger family, but if I could travel through time, I'd go to a game at the Polo Grounds before I'd go to Ebbets Field. That looks like such a nutty place to play baseball. I kind of wish the Wilpons had opted instead to rebuild the Polo Grounds.

    Mets haven't had many Vances. Other than Wilson, the only other guy I could find was Vance McHenry, who was with the Jackson Mets in 1983.

    There was a headline in the Daily News the other day about the Mets taking a new approach towards veterans. (Something like that.) I thought it meant they were giving up on Harris and/or Hairston, but it was instead about visiting the veterans at Walter Reed.

    "Anti-gay" seems more appropriate than "homophobic" If McDowell had, upon seeing a gay couple, stood on a chair and yelled "Eek!" then I'd think he was homophobic. It seems, however, that he's merely a hater. It seems likely that some anti-gay feelings (I wouldn't venture to guess that it's most) come from repressed gay tendencies and self-loathing. Maybe that's where the phobic suffix comes from.

    Why is it when someone says something that's anti-gay, it's characterized as homophobic? Other prejudices aren't typically portrayed as coming from fear.

    I agree. He should spend more time on the AAA disabled list so that when it's time for him to be on the major league DL, he'll be ready.

    I haven't embraced the new stats at all. I would have loved them if they had come out about twenty years earlier. I don't question their value, I just haven't devoted myself to becoming familiar with them. I don't see the logic in adding OBP to SLG. I understand the motivation in combining them, but adding them doesn't make sense to me. When displaying "triple slash" stats, I know that batting average is first, but I'm unsure if Slugging comes before or after OBP.
