  1. Energy... blah blah blah... energy... blah blah blah... energy...
  2. Didn't Vincent Chase make this movie a few years ago? Please do not quote any part of my post in reply. Huh? And... oops!
  3. That would be Eddie Arcaro.
  4. The eyes and the mouth do seem to be a good fit for Chuck Hiller.
  5. Edgy DC wrote: This may seem obvious, but if Beltran is talking about paying for plastic surgery.... Excellent point!
  6. I got an e-mail asking who that is in the photo. (I recognize Jack Lemmon, of course. I'm referring to the guy in the photo within the photo.) I'm thinking it may be Wes Westrum, but I'm not sure. Anybody?
  7. Having the signature on the tombstone is pretty classy.
  8. This from Lenny Dykstra, as quoted in the Daily News this morning: When I first came aboard, I think I was out drinking with Wally Backman, Lenny Dykstra said. We were on the road, and I said to Wally, Im going to wake up Carter. I was mule-kicking his hotel door. The Kid was nice, never cussed. But he picked me up like a child, pinned me against the wall You ever do this again . . . I saw the fire in his eyes, dude.
  9. G-Fafif wrote: Keith utterly broken up talking Kid with Francesa. Was Francesa boasting that he had predicted that Gary Carter would one day be dead?
  10. Ed Hearn and Randy Niemann.
  11. I remember I was at NYU, and stopped at the stationery store on University Place to grab a Daily News on my way to breakfast. Flipped it over to see if there was any baseball news on the back page and found out that Gary Carter was a Met. My whole day was transformed. I was at the home opener that year, freezing cold in the stands. Couldn't believe that the game was going into extra innings. Bought hot chocolate to stay warm but it froze solid before I could get it back to my seat. But Gary Carter's storybook ending to that game made it all worthwhile. I wish I was able to see the rebroadcast on SNY tonight, but MLB content gets blacked out by Verizon. (Thanks, lawyers!) Gary. Keith. Darryl. Doc. What a Fab Four they were!
  12. This image is now the UMDB banner. I'll keep it up for at least a week.
  13. Looks like a Matt Lauer wannabe.
  14. I think you're right. "Chuffed" means pleased. Trans Monk probably meant to say that he was "bonkered to the clown."
  15. I'm with Vic. Sure we're all (including myself) going to hope for that miraculous season where everything breaks the right way and the Mets win the World Series, but it's much more realistic to expect a fourth- or fifth-place season. Yes, the Mets have a decent shot at being better than they were last year, but that's not setting the bar very high. I anticipate that this is going to be a mostly gloomy season dominated by David Wright trade rumors. I hope I'm wrong, but hoping won't make it so.
  16. More UMDB memories posted today.
  17. That's great news! Zack Wheeler is less valuable than wiper fluid! They'll have to remember that argument when it comes to arbitration time.
  18. He sure is! There's been some speculation that Kirk Newiswenehuewenis will have a shot at displacing him during the season.
  19. Wasn't 1979 the year that the Mets won their last six games in a row in a desperate attempt to avoid 100 losses? I also remember 1979 as a rematch of the first World Series I ever watched, the 1971 Series. (I thought that was pretty cool.) And yes, it was nice not to see the Yankees in the playoffs for the first time in three years. I do also remember Seaver pitching in the playoffs; his only non-Mets postseason appearance, although he was a 1986 Red Sock. (Hard to believe that, isn't it?) Was that the season he threw a no-hitter? Jerry Koosman's first year as an ex-Met. 1978 would be his only Opening Day start for the Mets. Craig Swan was the guy in '79, one year after his ERA title. Last season for Ed Kranepool, the last of the 69ers, other than Rube and Piggy. The lone Mets season for Richie Hebner.
  20. First strike against him: He apparently borrowed Roger Clemens' baby names book.
  21. Edgy DC wrote: This is all jocularity about a misplaced decimal point, right? I sure hope so!
  22. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Rack packs now are $500 with only 36 cards. So each card costs only $13.89? That's a bargain, even though it doesn't come with a stick of gum!
  23. How would that help? I really doubt it would help me, as I wouldn't be concerned with the strength of the signal in New York, but with how well it can be heard from a distance. I rarely listen on the radio anymore (most likely because I spend less time in the car than I used to, and because I have the MLB Extra Innings package) but I'd still hate to lose the clear signal that the Mets get with the 660 spot on the dial.
  24. Frank Tanana! I had just about forgotten that he was a Met. By the time they got him, he was long past his days as a sensation with the Angels. I remember when he and Nolan Ryan (who also used to be a Met, by the way) were just striking out everybody. Those 19 years between Tanana's rookie year (1974) and the year he became a Met (1993) seem like even longer than that to me, because those same years took me from being an 11-year-old to being a (slightly wiser) 30-year-old. Now? 19 years! Pish! That's nothing!
  25. Those of us who care about this franchise should try to organize an Arab Spring.
