  1. Voting for both halves of Monday's doubleheader loss to the Giants will close on Thursday morning. Schaefer POTG 4/23/12, Game 1 - Giants 6, Mets 1 Schaefer POTG 4/23/12 (Game 2) - Giants 7, Mets 2

Frayed Knot wrote: Can your magic spreadsheet conjure whether five or more players making their ML debut in April with the caveat being that none of them were on the roster for opening day is a first in NYM history or is it something more akin to the norm? No, I don't think I can do that. I don't have data about who was on the roster when, just when they played. This April certainly does seem more volatile than most though.

  4. I've posted a lot of stuff in the last week or so. This one, from today, amused me. Lance Johnson Queens native, April 24, 2012 Two quick memories related to Lance Johnson. First, he autographed a baseball for my friend Adam. He addressed it, "To Atom." Second, I was among a group of lucky kids who had the chance to participate in a clinic in the outfield at Shea Stadium with Bobby Jones. At one point, Jones kicked at the centerfield turf as if he were digging in on a pitching rubber. After kicking loose a small divot, he said, "Lance is going to kill me." I love the first one!
  5. It's official: Mets put RHP Pelfrey on 15-day disabled list with elbow problem, LF Bay out with broken rib By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, April 24, 4:46 PM NEW YORK The New York Mets have put starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey and left fielder Jason Bay on the 15-day disabled list. The Mets made the moves before Tuesday nights game against Miami. Pelfrey is sidelined with inflammation in his right elbow. But Mets general manager Sandy Alderson says the team hasnt ruled out a torn ligament, and says Pelfrey will get a second opinion. Bay broke a rib on his left side trying for a diving catch during Monday nights doubleheader sweep by San Francisco. The Mets say an MRI exam showed a nondisplaced fracture. Infielder Zach Lutz and left-handed pitcher Robert Carson were recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
  6. I suspect he'll be back soon. I'd be surprised if he pitched at all for Buffalo between now and Friday.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: New team in town. New light. New life. New Mets in uniform. It's gonna be great. Sure, and maybe I'll miss a great game. But I can live with that.
  8. Days like yesterday make me think, "Ugh! They have to play again tonight?!?" Not feeling at all motivated to watch.
  9. Entirely possible. The 11's were coming fast and furious for a while there.
  10. Definitely Bob Ojeda. In fact, he's the only player I can say with certainty wore 19. If you gave me 1,000 guesses, I wouldn't have picked 19 for Anthony Young. (On second thought, I probably could have gotten it in less than 50 guesses, but you get the idea.) I think that by the time Young (and Ryan Church) came along, I had pretty much stopped noticing uniform numbers. And... I thought Tim Foli wore 11 the second time around?
  11. Zoilo, by the way, is a great name! Sounds like some kind of butter substitute. And his middle name is "Parahoy" In retrospect, I wish I had named my kids (both of them!) Zoilo Parahoy.

  13. Frayed Knot wrote: Also I'm betting he's the first NYM with a Z in both his first and last name. Lee Mazzilli and Chris Canizzaro both had two Zs but not one in each. You are correct. Of all the names I have in the UMDB database tables, only 7 have Z's in the first name and last name. Enzo Hernandez Gonzalo Marquez Elizardo Ramirez Eliezer Alfonzo Zoilo Sanchez Zach Lutz Robinzon Diaz Zach Lutz and Zoilo Sanchez are Mets minor leaguers. The others are all... others. (Most likely Mets opponents, but I haven't checked for sure.)
  14. If that's what he thinks, he should be enjoying his job security.
  15. Going "a couple of days" without making a defensive miscue hardly makes you a Gold Glove candidate.
  16. Voting for Friday night's loss to the Giants, and Saturday's win, will both close on Wednesday morning. Schaefer POTG 4/20/12 - Giants 4, Mets 3 (10 Innings) Schaefer POTG 4/21/12 - Mets 5, Giants 4
  17. Yesterday we saw something rare in Mets history: two players making their Mets debuts on the same day, but in different games. This was only the seventh time that such a thing has happened, and only the second time that it wasn't during the expanded roster days of September. August 6, 1967 Game 1: Cal Koonce Game 2: Billy Wynne September 19, 1969 Game 1: Bob Johnson Game 2: Jessie Hudson September 15, 1971 Game 1: John Milner and Buzz Capra Game 2: Don Rose September 1, 1984 Game 1: Herm Winningham Game 2: Calvin Schiraldi September 7, 1986 Game 1: Stan Jefferson Game 2: Dave Magadan September 8, 2011 Game 1: Chris Schwinden Game 2: Val Pascucci April 23, 2012 Game 1: Jeremy Hefner Game 2: Jordany Valdespin
  18. I was listening on the car radio as I was driving home from work. That fifth-inning GIDP from Davis ruthlessly pricked my gonfalon bubble.
  19. I anointed him my favorite minor leaguer last summer after seeing him play a game for Binghamton at Reading. Nice to see him make the big team, even if only for a little while. Not sure what his future is if Tejada and Murphy work out and Wright stays (and I hope all three happen!) but that's a concern for some other time.
  20. First inning ends. Batista throws 28 pitches, 13 of them for strikes! Three hits, one walk, two runs.
  21. Three batters into the game, and we're down 1-0. Sandoval singles in Cabrera.
