  2. Voting for both games played against the Reds last week will close on Tuesday morning. Schaefer POTG 5/16/12 - Reds 6, Mets 3 Schaefer POTG, 05/17/2012 Mets 9, Cincinnati 4

How come? Do you think the injury took something out of him? It seems so strange for him to be doing so well then lose it all. I don't really know the "why", but would we be that surprised if Ike hit, say, .210 in Buffalo? Whatever is causing him to be so awful may not resolve itself. We were concerned that Lucas Duda would be Mike Vail, but maybe we should have been worried about Ike Davis.

  5. Adam Rubin wrote: Terry Collins no longer is dismissing Ike Davis to the minors as a possibility. A day after the Miami Marlins sent 2011 All-Star first baseman Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A, and only days after the Blue Jays demoted their first baseman, Adam Lind, Collins acknowledged Davis needs to pick up his performance during this road trip or that fate could befall him too.
  6. I keep thinking that this thread is about Hubert H. Humphrey.
  7. Saw it way back when and didn't really like it, but even at the time I was aware that I was watching it at a moment when I really wasn't in the mood for it. So I owe it another chance.
  8. Saw it in the theater with my kids. We all really enjoyed it.
  9. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Because if a batter had the ability to elevate his hitting in order to bring home the runner on third base, then he'd know enough about the importance of being that runner on third base in the first place. And so therefore, he'd try just as hard in those at bats when no one was on base to get to third base on his own. If a batter had the ability to bat better at key moments, why wouldn't he use those "magic clutch powers" to hit safely at all times, instead of limiting his use of the clutch to RISP's. Wouldn't he wanna bat 1.000 for the season? Wouldn't he wanna hit a homer every time up? And where the hell is the pitcher in all of this? Clutch hitting proponents act as if the pitcher is a superfluous bystander in all of this, without the ability to clutch up himself, and offset the batter's clutchness. With no say or sway in how the at bat ends up. It's all supposedly on the batter's clutchness, who apparently has total control of the at bat. It's absurd. And illogical. Well, if that's your definition of clutch, then yes, it's absurd to think it exists. I think of clutch as a situation more than a personality trait. But if a player is "clutch" I think it means that his knees won't get wobbly when the game is on the line. It's not that he's likely to do better in such situations, but he's also less likely to do worse. Keith Hernandez was clutch. So was Mike Piazza. Is there a stat that can prove it? I would doubt it. But they had a fire in their eye when the game was on the line. They wanted to be at the plate at that big moment. I don't know that that's true of everyone.

  11. Well, I did watch, and I'm glad I did.
  12. And it's Francisco to close it out. I really don't know if I wanna watch.
  13. Mets don't score in the ninth. Fasten your seatbelts!
  14. And are we really going to turn the ninth inning over to Frank Francisco?? I hope the Mets score seven runs in the top of the ninth. I'm tempted to leave Byrdak in there, even though the Jays are due to send up three righties.
  15. I'd love to see this happen. How about a seven-way tie for that last spot? The more screwed up, the better.

  17. Count me among those who have a hideous love for the Brewers logo. I spotted the MB in the glove immediately and I think the whole thing is awfully darn clever. Also, I've known for years that that Expos' elb is an M, but I still can't quite see it.
  18. Mets who were Blue Jays I can't believe we forgot Mauro Gozzo!
  19. I think this is the guy I'll conflate Baxter with:
  20. Exactly. I think that what would give a serious competitive advantage.
  21. Well, he's certainly no longer a shoe-in for demotion. I remember we were all thinking that he'd go down to Buffalo when Torres returned, but by the time Torres was ready, Bay was hurt. Now when Bay comes back, does Baxter go away? The Daily News said that it would be either Baxter, Turner, or Nieuwenhuis. I'm not sure I like any of those choices.
