  1. That does it! I'll never again visit the website of the Omaha World Herald!

That would be the first game of the 1995 season, April 26, when nine Mets made their team debut: Edgardo Alfonzo, Brett Butler, Jerry Dipoto, Carl Everett, Brook Fordyce, Doug Henry, Blas Minor, Ricky Otero, and Bill Spiers.
  3. The overall storyline from yesterday seems to be, "Holy Crap! The Mets won and the Yankees lost!" as if such a thing was totally unprecedented. Which of course, it's not.
  4. Buck 1 Byrd 1 Cowgill 3 Niese 4 Tejada 1
  5. Will Johan be lining up with the team during today's introductions? If he does, I hope he gets a nice hand.
  6. I agree! Path to step balloons!
  7. I wouldn't like it, but yes, of course. If they were to leave New York, however, then I'd drop them immediately.

  11. Yikes! I somehow replied to the wrong thread! Sorry, m.e.t.b.o.t.!
  12. I agree. He's not going to Cooperstown.
  13. I usually opt for the turkey hero (with red peppers and marinated mushrooms) at Mama's of Corona from the Food Court that's above the rotunda.
  14. Johan Santana works at Wawa? I had no idea! If he can't get by on one salary, what hope is there for the rest of us?
  15. Edgy MD wrote: Any notion that Terry's nightmare is true? That Johan re-injured himself because Terry let him go the distance for the no-hitter. (If Terry's culpable, than I and many other fans certainly are.) The timeline certainly supports that scenario, statistically. I don't think so, but we'll never know for sure. Edgy MD wrote: Any notion that the culprit is Johan's chip-on-his-surgically-reparied-shoulder premature trip to the mound earlier in spring, to show the beat writers and Mets he's more a man than they were whispering? Maybe he was already in trouble but that was the straw that broke the camel's shoulder socket, so to speak. This may be more likely. I think Sandy was asked about it at the press conference; it seems someone asked if the Mets were going to try to void the final year of the contract because Santana's throwing session that day was unauthorized and, perhaps, ill-advised. Sandy's response was that they weren't thinking along those lines.

  17. This news made me... shrug. While I was hoping that Johan would pitch well enough in the early part of the season to be tradeable, much like Beltran was, I thought that wasn't all that likely. I'm glad he was a Met; I don't regret losing the players that the Mets sent to Minnesota for Santana but overall he certainly wasn't worth the money that he was paid. As for Wheeler, he has to stay in the minors for the first 20 days of the season in order for his free agency to be delayed by a year. I think it's worth waiting that long. He'd have to stay down a bit longer for arbitration to be delayed, but I think the delay of free agency is more important. I think we'll see Zack as a Met by early May.
  18. Voting for the 2013 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Monday, April 1, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the ninth season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright has been the winner in in six of the eight years of the revived prize. The other winners were Johan Santana in 2008 and Jose Reyes in 2011. A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, Relief Pitcher, and Bench Player of the Month will be named. Voters are asked to adhere to a specific format, which is outlined at http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/6200/f9_t6278.shtml
  19. Andy Martino, Daily News wrote: NY Mets not sold on Ruben Tejada Ruben Tejada is a talented and precocious young player, well-liked by teammates, but the Mets are not yet convinced he is the shortstop of the future. As the most recent evidence of this, the idea of sending Tejada to Triple-A and making Omar Quintanilla the Opening Day shortstop has been floated in staff meetings this spring, according to team insiders. It was discussed a few times, but I highly doubt it will happen, said one source. Still, many in the organization are very concerned about Tejadas .080 spring batting average. Whether Tejada remains with the Mets all season, or ends up spending time in Las Vegas, the discussions are evidence of his current standing with the team. They also follow the Mets offseason willingness to move Tejada in the right deal. As John Harper reported earlier this spring, the Mets tried to include Tejada and/or Daniel Murphy in a deal for Arizona outfielder Justin Upton, who ultimately went to Atlanta. Many scouts still like Tejada, praising him for his two-strike hitting and overall baseball IQ, and one Mets person who has known the shortstop for several years called him a great kid. A rival evaluator said, Hes a good player, but I feel like he has gone backward a little bit. It appears that Tejada will keep his job for now, but it has become clear over the past few months that the Mets are not yet sold on him as the long-term solution.
  20. I suppose that it's important to raise awareness of pink shoelaces.
  21. I doubt that they'd "lose" him; he'd just be unavailable for most Saturday Mets games. As for Tim, I'm not too familiar with his recent incarnation. I don't watch games that the Mets aren't playing, and when they're broadcast by someone other than Gary, Keith, and Ron I tend to only pay half-attention (at most) to what the announcers are saying. So while I admit that it's very possible that Tim jumped the shark at some point, I have no opinion on this. What I do know is how Tim enlivened the Mets booth when he (and Steve Zabriskie, who also deserves credit) appeared in 1983. The difference in the telecasts between 1982 and 1983 was enormous. Lorn Brown had lulled Ralph Kiner into a season-long coma, but when Ralph was joined with Tim and Steve he really came back to life. Combined with what was happening on the field (return of Seaver, acquisition of Hernandez, ascension of Strawberry) 1983 was the year when it again became fun to be a Mets fan, and Tim McCarver was no small part of that. Whatever he may be today, I'll always think of him as the guy from the 1980's.
  22. Another new feature debuts today: The Ultimate Mets Database - No-Hitters and One-Hitters
  23. I predict that he'll be sold to the Angels on March 27.
  24. I wonder what ever happened with his neighbor's tree?
  25. Singleton and Brooks, at least, were traded for veteran players (both from the Expos!) who helped the Mets win a pennant. From your list, it's guys like Mookie and Cleon who came closest to having an exclusive Mets career, and would have if they hadn't been needlessly dispatched.
