  2. Well, he may end up being the answer for 2015, but I doubt that he'd be anointed during the offseason. If anything, he'd get the job at the last minute after other plans fell through.
  3. Number of Mets triples this year is now 11.
  4. My guess is that unless the Mets trade for someone like Castro, guys like Flores, Reynolds, and Tejada (if he's still around) will compete for the starting shortstop job next spring. And the competition may continue into the regular season, as with Davis/Duda this year. If Reynolds wins the job, he'd be seen as a short-term shortstop solution, but having the job gives him the opportunity to prove he can keep it. I suspect that if Reynolds is the 2015 shortstop, the position will still be on the Mets shopping list for 2016, but who knows? Maybe he'll surprise.
  5. Thirty games left in the season. The Mets are currently 62-70, projecting to a final record of 76-86. The goal of 90 wins is still technically within reach; they'd have to go 28-2 the rest of the way. One more win and the Mets will have attained the very modest goal of avoiding 100 losses.
  6. Voting for all three games played in Los Angeles last weekend will close on Thursday morning, some time after 10 a.m. The August 23 game is especially low on votes; only three people have voted so far. I predicted that Ike Davis would be the Mets first baseman in April, and then lose the job to suckiness, but I don't think Duda will be the guy to replace him. I think Lucas will see about as much playing time as Rusty Staub did in 1985, and then get traded. Meanwhile, I was way off the mark. (At least I was right about Ike Davis, though.)
  9. The A's probably couldn't flip Colon immediately, but I'm sure they could after the season. And the difference between now and then is only a little over four weeks of salary.

  11. Voting for Wednesday's win in Oakland will close on Tuesday morning, some time after 10 a.m. Only four votes are in for this game so far, which is a very low number for Mets victory. If you're planning to vote for this game, please try to do so today. Schaefer POTG 8/20/14 - Mets 8, A's 5

  14. Why was Wright wremoved? Was he hurt, or is Terry resting him because of the big lead?
  15. Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that this is his worst season. Hopefully he bounces back; he's signed for another six years!

  18. Sources: Mets to work out 2 Cubans LOS ANGELES Rusney Castillo never was considered seriously by the Mets, but the team has at least two other Cuban defectors on its radar. As The Post reported Friday before the Mets 6-2 loss to the Dodgers, the Mets plan to work out Roberto Carlos, a 28-year-old shortstop. But according to a source, the workout at the teams facility in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday will also include Pavel Quesada, a 25-year-old third baseman. Quesada, who has received interest from the Orioles and Rangers, among others, is a solid power threat according to a source who has seen him play, and could be a consideration for first base and outfield if he lands with the Mets. Carlos, a switch hitter, departed the U.S. last year after a stint playing independent baseball and settled in the Dominican Republic, hoping to gain more exposure. A source said Carlos previously slipped through the baseball cracks because he didnt have representation after defecting from Cuba in 2012. Quesada is living in the Dominican Republic on visa and applying for residency.

  20. Channel 47 News wrote: A minor league baseball player hurt on the field in Brevard County was flown to the hospital in the middle of a game Friday afternoon at the Washington Nationals' rookie league practice complex in Viera. It happened just before 2 p.m. in the bottom of the 4th inning, as the Gulf Coast League Nationals were taking on Port St. Lucie's GCL Mets. A local team representative said a Mets player slid into second base, and his head collided with the knee of the Nationals' shortstop, who was covering the bag. The injured player, identified by ESPN as Manuel Hilario, began convulsing after the collision. Hilario is a 22-year-old first baseman from the Dominican Republic. Paramedics arrived on scene and called in a medical helicopter, which landed on the field. The player was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. His condition was not immediately released. The game was suspended and is scheduled to continue Saturday at 10 a.m.
  21. It seems that architecture has to go through an "old and outdated" period before it advances to "quaint and charming" and ultimately "beloved." Fenway and Wrigley are obvious examples. Sadly, it didn't quite work out for Tiger Stadium. The challenge is to survive that first phase. Buildings that do that can end up having a long life. I was hoping that Shea Stadium would be able to do that. I guess none of the multi-purpose stadiums of that era are fated to see that happen. Is Oakland the last of them? What about Kansas City? Dodger Stadium doesn't really count because it was built just for baseball, so it's in a somewhat different category. Oh, and that reminds me: Candlestick Park has a date with the wrecking ball coming up.
