  1. I'll reserve judgement until we hear Brian Williams' side of the story.
  2. He seems to me like a guy who will spend the entire season in Las Vegas.
  3. I like that they have a "Cheeky Chumps Department".
  4. His age surprises me; I would have guessed that he was more like 21 or 22. My guess is that he doesn't make the team out of spring training, but ends up pitching in about 35 games for the Mets this year, with an ERA around 3.70.
  5. So apparently Willie couldn't even stand at the shortstop position without falling over. And this was nine years before 1973!
  6. Joe McDonald, the Cardinals general manager, offered this odd justification for the trade: If Allen was not having a bad year, theres no way we could have gotten him. That's a real "WTF" if I've ever heard one.
  7. I remember taking a tour of West Point back in the 1980s, and there was a little boy on the tour who was a rabid drooling Mets fan. (In a cute way, of course.) When he heard that they had a "Shea Stadium" he was deliriously happy. I remember I gave him a folded Mets schedule from my wallet. (I seem to recall it being a 1987 schedule; was that when they had that orange Number 1 logo?) He was thrilled by the pocket schedule too. So anyway, yes, I knew that there was a Shea Stadium up that way. Nice to know that there's still at least one of them around.
  8. If I was a Mets player I wouldn't even want to talk to Mike Francesca, so being banned from doing it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. (It might actually be doing me a favor, since Mike's ire would be directed at the team instead of at me.)
  9. I say David Wright. A big bounceback from him is key. Even if Harvey doesn't throw a single pitch in 2014, the Mets still have a deep starting rotation (Colon-Niese-Wheeler-deGrom-Gee-Syndergaard-Montero-Matz) but if Wright only drives in 60 runs this year, the Mets likely won't score nearly enough runs to win many games. I hope Harvey pitches like he did in 2013, but I'm really not expecting it at all.
  10. If there's a Puerto Rican Hall of Fame, he should definitely be in that one too.
  11. I agree that it was a gamble worth taking, but knowing how it turned out: no playoff appearances and two full seasons where Johan was paid a LOT of money to not pitch at all, it was a deal the Mets would have been better off passing on. The no-hitter was a great moment and a treasured memory, but it all adds up, in retrospect, to a bad deal for the Mets.
  12. I agree. It was a great deal, but it didn't work out.
  13. First, and so far only, Met player whose last name started with Q. Is it a coincidence that shortly after they got their first "Q" the Mets finally got their first no-hitter? I think not!
  14. Edgy MD wrote: I mean, he's a post-op pitcher. It wouldn't be the first time that Scott Boras steered a client into protecting his future by taking some of his paydays up front. I mean, it wouldn't be, right? I honestly don't know. It would be heartening to find an example or two.
  15. I'd be absolutely shocked if Harvey were a Met in 2019. Scott Boras will take him into free agency after 2018, and he'll be gone. I think the wise move will be to trade him after the 2016 season.
  16. I can't even remember who "Escobar" was!
  17. GAH! That's awful! That combination thing worked much better when the Buffalo Bisons were a Mets affiliate.
  18. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Whaddya do if a reliever gets injured, or experiences discomfort before the first at bat is resolved? Sounds like a rule that would be better suite to Strat-O-Matic or some other board game. Obviously there would have to be an exception. Just like there's the exception to the must-face-one-batter rule.
  19. This reminds me of a very cool store I visited in Seattle this past summer. It's called "Ebbets Field Flannels" and they sell a wide variety of vintage-style caps, t-shirts, and jerseys. I seem to remember that they had more t-shirts in their store than are pictured on the web site, but I could be wrong. Ebbets Field Flannels
  20. Or Schenectady or Parsipanny.
  21. Regarding this shift thing: It is, and always has been, the responsibility of the hitter to hit 'em where they ain't. The fielders shouldn't be required to stand in a place where the batter is less likely to hit the ball.
  22. I've logged this in the UMDB so Charlie is, sadly, now officially dead. I still need to fill in the place of death. I infer from the article that it was somewhere in Florida, but I'll have to circle back and check subsequent obituaries to make sure I get the right city.
  23. I'm pretty sure that if I were to eat that biscuit, I'd want to first remove the eyes.
  24. I'm sure Gee has trade value. The fact that he hasn't been dealt yet is more likely because Sandy is holding out for the best deal possible than that nobody at all wants him.
  25. I'm not expecting that 2015 will be like 1984, but I don't think it's an unreasonable hope. That would still leave them quite a bit short of 1986, but after the last few years I'd be delighted with a 1984.
