  1. Centerfield wrote: Once a player is eligible, the voters should vote based upon the player's performance. And only the player's performance. If you add anything else, this already subjective standard becomes too arbitrary and random. But the player's character is already part of the official criteria: 5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. If it was just about the numbers, then yes, Bonds and Clemens would definitely go in. But I can't fault voters who choose not to ignore "integrity, sportsmanship, character". In fact, I agree with them.
  2. That's the lunchbucket.
  3. We'll have to ask the head office in Stockholm to look into it.
  4. Ceetar wrote: shame is of course, subjective. As is fame. The whole thing is subjective.
  5. That pick came from "Randy" who makes "his" picks at random.
  6. Adam Rubin dashes Heyward hopes: BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The New York Mets are shopping for a center fielder, but they are not interested in bringing in a free agent who would limit Juan Lagares to a bench role. The Mets made a sizable financial commitment to Lagares on the eve of this past season that guarantees him $2.5 million in 2016, $4.5 million in 2017, $6.5 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019. The hope is to add a player capable of manning center field who can complement Lagares. Mets don't want to displace Juan Lagares with outfield addition The article also includes this little gem: The Mets would have to weigh at that point whether in-house options such as Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Darrell Ceciliani may be just as attractive.
  7. I wonder if this place has it in their budget to be able to afford such a sign.
  8. Bonds and Clemens (and McGwire) brought a level of embarrassment to the game that Griffey and Piazza did not. I know I'm in a minority here, but I think Shame negates Fame.
  9. Fans should probably just call it "The Porch" and ignore any corporate sponsorship. But I doubt that will happen.
  10. Centerfield wrote: You'd think at 40 I'd know enough not to be disappointed when a player I like does something like this. Yup. We tend to think that we know some celebrities far better than we actually do. (See Cosby, William H.) We shouldn't be surprised when we hear news like this, because we only know Jose as a smiling shortstop and really know little to nothing about what he's like in private. But it surprises us anyway, because of that illusion of familiarity.
  11. His wife told police that Reyes grabbed her by the throat and shoved her into a glass door that led to the balcony in their room at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Not cool at all.
  12. Who are those four players on that last Post cover? That's Zobrist in the Oakland uniform, I think. Is that Prado on the far right?
  13. Oh, and a couple of days before you trade him, tell him to buy a house.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: Given the choice FOR THIS YEAR you'd want Desmond but of course that choice isn't on the table. They can do what the Marlins did to Reyes. Sign him but refuse a no-trade clause and then deal him after the first season.
  15. . Vote for the tabloid covers that you like the best. You may select up to three choices. Voting will run for seven days. Jacob deGrom shuts down the Cardinals. David Wright's diagnosis gets worse. A bad day for Matt Harvey. A good day for Noah Syndergaard. (First "Thor" references, from two of the three tabloids.) A bad day for Jon Niese and the Mets bullpen. The Post suggests four players the Mets should consider acquiring in a trade.
  16. The Royals would still be able to find a way to dunk in a late-inning game-tying hit.
  17. MFS62 wrote: Exactly. Wilmer showed over the last half of the season and in the post season that he is capable of handling the position defensively. There are other holes to be filled during the off season - second base, center field, third base, bench and bullpen that have a higher priority. I think that if they sign a shortstop, they would be filling the hole at second base, because Wilmer would likely move over there, at least for the immediate future. Herrera might eventually displace Flores at second, but that would be a bit further down the road.
  18. Ex-GM forecasts top free agent moves For whatever it's worth, Jim Duquette has the Mets interested in Jason Heyward, Yoenis Cespedes, Justin Upton, Daniel Murphy, Ben Zobrist, Ian Desmond, Dexter Fowler, and Colby Rasmus. He predicts that the Mets will get Desmond. He also says Heyward to the Cardinals, Cespedes to the Padres, Upton and Murphy to the Angels, Zobrist to the Dodgers, Fowler to the Tigers, and Rasmus to the Astros.

  21. True. It would have been better, I think, to give it a more traditional name like, It's Whatever Happens In This Movie, Charlie Brown
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm not sure what it is, maybe the lack of outline on the letters, but Newsday's headlines almost never look right to me. They also use that terrible wide font on the Niese page, I might have voted for that otherwise. I think the photos on Newsday's covers often look better than those on the Post covers. The Post covers can get kind of cluttered looking sometimes. I agree about the font on the QUICK FIX cover. Their TOTAL LOSS cover works a lot better, I think. The Daily News covers are in a different category. The photos aren't as brightly colored, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I like the narrower dimension. It looks more like a newspaper cover to me, and the fact that the dimensions are also closer to those of comic book covers is also appealing to me. Until I started posting these polls, I hadn't realized how often "CITI" appears in Mets-related headlines. It may be as common as using SHEA in place of words that rhyme with "Shea" used to be.
  23. . Vote for the tabloid covers that you like the best. You may select up to three choices. Voting will run for seven days. After being shut out three games in a row, a three-run "outburst" helps the Mets beat the Orioles. The Mets honor assassinated NYPD officer Brian Moore. A home run by Juan Lagares helps the Mets to a win in Philadelphia. Noah Syndergaard loses in his big league debut in Wrigley Field. The Cubs go on to sweep the four-game series. Mets lose to the Brewers. Dilson Herrera breaks his finger. All three papers use "SYN CITI" to describe Syndergaard's first major league victory, a 5-1 win over Milwaukee.
  24. I agree. Heyward looks to me like the kind of guy they should be going after. I hope that the reports that he's "off the table" are inaccurate.
