  1. Speaking of afternoon games, I'd like to see World Series games on Saturday and Sunday played during the day. If I remember correctly, the last time that happened was a 4 p.m. start for a Saturday game in 1987.
  2. I also miss complete games. And black uniforms, too, but in the way that you'd miss a sinus infection. I'd add that I miss the days when the "closer" role would be shared by two pitchers, a righty and a lefty, like McGraw and Frisella or Orosco and McDowell.
  3. I'm bumping this thread because it's currently tied.
  4. I haven't seen them, but from what I've heard I haven't been motivated to seek them out.
  5. The Round 3 (Sweet Sixteen) polls are beginning to expire and we have our first two entries into the Elite Eight, both from the New York Post. We also have now eliminated two of the three remaining Newsday covers in this competition. Poll 3.1.1 RUNAWAY TRAIN! (New York Post) defeated OLD TIMER'S DAY (Newsday) 9 to 7. Poll 3.1.2 N.Y. CITI (New York Post) defeated THOR'S DAY (Newsday) 9 to 7. Tentative schedule: January 4: N.Y. CITI vs. RUNAWAY TRAIN! . . . . . . . . . . . .
  6. This is what they really look like:
  7. BUMP! Poll ends tomorrow and is currently tied.
  8. I'm not sure Strawberry qualifies. Wouldn't he, under normal circumstances, have been eligible for free agency after 1989 unless he had signed a contract that took him through 1990? 1989 was his sixth full season in the big leagues.
  9. . Winner of Round 1.4.6 Winner of Round 2.4.4 TEAM OF DESTINY New York Daily News, October 27, 2015 With the World Series about to begin, the Daily News publishes a special wraparound cover. Winner of Round 1.4.2 Winner of Round 2.4.1 METS TAKE A HIT New York Post, October 11, 2015 Chase Utley breaks Ruben Tejada's leg when sliding into second base, and the Mets lose Game 2 of the NLDS to the Dodgers. . . . . . .
  10. Voting for Round Two is now complete and the final totals for the Sweet Sixteen are eight covers for the Post, five for the Daily News, and three for Newsday. Poll 2.4.1 METS TAKE A HIT (New York Post) defeated WRIGHTS THE SHIP! (Daily News) 9 to 7. Poll 2.4.2 APPLE JACKS! (New York Post) defeated HAIR'S LOOKIN' AT YOU, KID (New York Post) 10 to 4. Poll 2.4.3 MURPHY'S FLAW (Newsday) defeated DAN-TASTIC (Daily News) 8 to 5. Poll 2.4.4 TEAM OF DESTINY(Daily News) defeated HOW SWEEP IT IS! (Newsday) 9 to 7. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The following Round Three matchups from Group Four are already in progress: MURPHY'S FLAW vs. APPLE JACKS! TEAM OF DESTINY vs. METS TAKE A HIT The last poll from Round 3 has been posted today, and Round 4 will begin on Tuesday. Now that we're in the later rounds, with fewer polls, there will no longer be a new poll every day as we'll need to wait for active polls to close.
  11. Mike Pelfrey?
  12. . Winner of Round 1.4.8 Winner of Round 2.4.3 MURPHY'S FLAW Newsday, November 1, 2015 An error by Daniel Murphy opens the door for the Royals to win Game 4 of the World Series. Winner of Round 1.4.4 Winner of Round 2.4.2 APPLE JACKS! New York Post, October 18, 2015 Home runs by the Mets raise the Citi Field apple as the Mets take NLCS Game 1 from the Cubs. . . . . . .
  13. . Winner of Round 1.3.7 Winner of Round 2.3.3 YES-PEDES New York Daily News, September 10, 2015 Helped by an 8th-inning two-run homer by Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets beat the Nationals 5-3 in Washington, completing a key September series sweep. Winner of Round 1.3.4 Winner of Round 2.3.2 LARGE & IN CHARGE New York Post, August 27, 2015 In Philadelphia, Bartolo Colon throws 7 scoreless innings to lead the Mets to a 9-4 win. . . . . . .
  14. It seems kind of quaint to have a suspension that's not about PEDs.
  15. I voted indifferent. I don't think I'll mind having De Aza on the team, but I don't like the fact that this seems like it may preclude other and better deals.
  16. . Winner of Round 1.2.7 Winner of Round 2.2.4 CON4TO! New York Daily News, July 26, 2015 Michael Conforto goes 4 for 4 and scores 4 runs in a 15-2 Mets win over the Dodgers at Citi Field. Winner of Round 1.2.3 Winner of Round 2.2.1 AMAZIN' MATZ! New York Daily News, June 29, 2015 Steven Matz makes a memorable big-league debut at Citi Field against the Reds, pitching 7.2 innings and going 3 for 3 with 4 runs batted in. . . . . . .
  17. Oops, I posted the wrong poll today. Oh well. I'll also post the poll that was intended for today.
  18. So who's the third-string catcher in 2016? Is it Monell? Or is there someone else in Vegas* who would get the call if necessary? * I almost typed "Tidewater" there.
  19. . Winner of Round 1.3.6 Winner of Round 2.3.4 CAPITAL THRILL! New York Post, September 8, 2015 A three-run 7th inning gives the Mets an 8-5 win over the Nationals in Washington. Winner of Round 1.3.8 Winner of Round 2.3.1 AS GOOD AS IT METS New York Post, September 27, 2015 David Wright and Matt Harvey celebrate the Mets clinching of the National League East in Cincinnati. . . . . . .
  20. Already forgotten.
  21. I think, in a vacuum, each of the moves that the Mets made were fair to good. (This one is on the lower end, as is De Aza.) The problem is really that the sum of these moves doesn't seem to be adding up to much. If I could magically undo one of the transactions the Mets made this winter, this would probably be the one I'd choose.
