  1. I assume that the Mets fall into this category: All other teams will forfeit their second-highest remaining pick and will have their international bonus pool reduced by $500,000./quote] So if, hypothetically, they were to sign two of these guys, they'd lose their second- and third-round picks and get $1 million less to spend on international bonuses? That's the way I read it, yes. 41Forever Nov 07 2017 02:48 PM Re: Qualifying Offers That’s a steep penalty! Edgy MD Nov 07 2017 02:50 PM Re: Qualifying Offers They wouldn't lose international spending money, so much as lose the license to spend their own money. In other words, let's screw some Venezuelan kid and his family in the name of competitive balance when it's all about the league restraining labor costs. Centerfield Nov 07 2017 02:56 PM Re: Qualifying Offers I'm guessing poor Venezuelan families are not well represented at these labor hearings. Edgy MD Nov 07 2017 02:58 PM Re: Qualifying Offers No, they're not. But rich Venezuelans who were poor ones not too long ago are. I'd like to see a little more solidarity. Not that they're not basically getting screwed, but the money isn't going away, it's being redistributed. the pool size remains the same. They're not getting _more_ screwed. batmagadanleadoff Nov 07 2017 03:34 PM Re: Qualifying Offers Edgy MD wrote: In other words, let's screw some Venezuelan kid and his family in the name of competitive balance when it's all about the league restraining labor costs. Somewhere out there, Heinrich Himmler is smiling, because why should the players get any of the money that's out there? I'm surprised we're even drafting these players. Why not just chain them to the ship's galley against their will and ship 'em all here where the owners can grab em for free and force them to play under a reserve clause in perpetuity for minimum wage and if they resist, the owners get to whip the shit out of them because it's in their contract in the clause right after the reserve clause which takes effect even if they don't wanna sign the contract and if they don't wanna sign the contract, they get whipped for that too, because that's also in the contract. Fix that, Marvin Miller. I bet Heinrich would like this idea. Edgy MD Nov 07 2017 03:36 PM Re: Qualifying Offers Please leave the provocative nicknames to the president. Frayed Knot Nov 07 2017 07:55 PM Re: Qualifying Offers No, you're obviously confusing 'qualifying offer' with 'minimum sentencing'. It's an understandable error as many athletes experience both at some point during their careers. Frayed Knot Nov 17 2017 12:22 AM Re: Qualifying Offers All nine players* rejected their Qualifying Offers making them all Free Agents but with compensation attached, even if said compensation will wind up less onerous than in previous seasons. * Jake Arrieta - Cubs Lorenzo Cain - Royals Alex Cobb - Rays Wade Davis - Cubs Greg Holland - Rockies Eric Hosmer - Royals Lance Lynn - Cardinals Mike Moustakas - Royals Carlos Santana - Indians

I don't see how that helps advance the discussion, and I don't think it's good for the forum. If I'm the only one who feels this way, I'll stop. But I think someone needs to say that this is just wrong. He keeps trying to antagonize Namor, disregarding the fact that Namor can't see any of his posts, unless they're quoted by someone else, as has happened here.
  4. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: HARD pass. I believe I've outlined why in a few of our other Moussaka threads. Actually, there aren't any other Moustakas threads. Discussion of him has been scattered all over the place. That's why I created this thread.
  5. I'm not sure about that. The Mets, due to their poor season, might be immune to losing a first-round pick. I'm not clear on what the current rules are.
  6. The Royals extended a QO to Moustakas.
  7. I know there's little enthusiasm for Mike Moustakas here, and I can definitely see why that might be. But that doesn't mean that it might not happen. Or that he won't at least be the subject of a lot of hot stove chatter. So here's the thread for that.

Terry? Mr. Met? No, that hasn't been being tracked. I would guess that it's Cespedes, Harvey, deGrom, or Syndergaard. If you want to do a count on the finalists, meaning covers that have advanced into the second round, you can look at the bracket images from 2015 and 2016 in this thread.

  10. There was also Pedro Martinez. Does he count?
  11. Just came back from seeing it. It was fun.
  12. I don't like these whiny diatribes either. We see them from time to time. It's perfectly understandable to lose interest in your team; our interests can change as we go through life. And if rooting for your team brings you more pain than pleasure, then it makes sense to stop. But there's no need to go out with a whine like that, nor is there any call to tell other people to stop rooting for their team. I doubt that Lions fans have had "nothing but heartache". And any fan who's truly been suffering for 59 years needs to reevaluate his priorities.
  13. I know this means next to nothing, but John Harper has an article in the paper today where he predicts where each of his Top Twenty free agents will sign. He has the Mets signing Jay Bruce (for years, $60 million), Eduardo Nunez (four years, $44 million) and Brandon Kintzler (two years, $25 million).
  14. I agree. I hope that they're in on Hosmer.
  15. I wonder if Willie Randolph is sending them a resume?
  16. I think it's probably too much to expect for one offseason. For the Mets to go from 92 losses to 92 wins seems like a very steep climb. We'll see what happens. Maybe they'll surprise me. But I expect to go into 2018 with lower expectations than I did in 2017.
  17. We may just have to recruit some random Swedes who happen to be passing by on the day of the ceremony.
  18. . PREVIOUSLY ON THE TABLOID COVER DERBY 2015[/bigpurple] The winning cover, YES-PEDES, from the Daily News, was unveiled at a ceremony in Stockholm, attended by David Wright, U.S. ambassador to Sweden Mark Brzezinski, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and the ghost of Swedish actrees Ingrid Bergman. After the ceremony, the cover was put on display in the CPF's headquarters lobby in Stockholm. In this photo we get a glimpse of Maja before her celebrity makeover. When YES-PEDES was eventually displaced in the lobby by the 2016 winner, it went on a world tour. Here we see it in the Louvre in Paris, where it nudged aside Leonardo's Mona Lisa. 2016[/bigpurple] The 2016 ceremony took place inside the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Terry Collins was joined by Sweden's Queen Silvia, CPF receptionist and Swedish reality show star Maja, children from the Järfälla branch of the Kran Pool Barn Klubb, and the ghost of Swedish actress Greta Garbo. The winning cover, CES BOOM BAH!, was once again from The Daily News. The ceremony was marred by unrest outside in the streets, where the throng protested the early exit from the competititon of all urine-related Matt Harvey covers. Maja switched to a more business-like outfit for this photo of CES BOOM BAH! in the CPF lobby.
  19. Well, the good news is that we have a lot of pitchers with ERAs over 6.00. The key to 2018 will be getting more innings from them!
  20. I've been to Everett, Washington! The Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum has a fantastic collection of World War II planes. (And tanks and weapons and other stuff too.) If you're ever in the area, it's a must-see! The docents there really know their stuff and they're fascinating to talk to.
  21. What are the chances of JD Martinez? Hard to say. I don't think we can totally rule it out, because we don't know what their plans are or, really, what the budget is. I'd call Martinez a maybe. Possibly a faint maybe, but not a no. At least not yet.
  22. Hang in there! It's only four days away!
