  1. Early character design sketches for Mr. Met: I kinda like the smug version on the left.
  2. Mex17 wrote: What would have to occur for some unnamed and perhaps not yet even born future Met to eventually surpass Seaver as the undisputed best player in the history of the franchise? Four Cy Youngs? Lead the team to two world championships? Pose for a yearbook cover with eight baseballs arranged in the shape of the number 8?
  3. I'm not sure what those graphics represent. It shows where the ball goes, right, but doesn't factor where the catcher set his glove?
  4. As of today, Baseball Prospectus has the Mets at 33% to win the division and 12.8% to win one of the two wild card slots. Phillies are 36.1% for the division, 12.7% for the wild card. Nationals are 24.2% and 12.2%. As for winning the World Series, Phillies are 4.1%, Nationals 4.0%, and Mets 3.0%. So the Mets are more likely to make the playoffs than the Nationals are, but less likely to win the World Series. The team with the best World Series chances are the Astros, at 14.5%, followed by the Indians at 14.3%. Other teams over 10% are the Diamondbacks at 10.8 and the Yankees at 10.2.
  5. The rumors have been out there, but haven't there also been stories of him being quite the "ladies' man"? Not that the two are necessarily mutually exclusive, I guess.
  6. Cast your vote!
  7. No new polls this week, but the Yearbook Cover Derby marches on as last week's polls continue to close. Today we note the 14 to 3 victory that 1968 won over the 2012 cover. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  8. dgwphotography wrote: There's an option not listed - He'll return to the rotation out of necessity due to injuries And that is in fact a quite plausible option.
  9. I voted "struggle and released". I don't think it will happen immediately, but maybe by late June.
  10. Something in your message distracted me. I can't quite put my finger on it, and probably shouldn't even if I could.
  11. I know. And this trip is followed by a visit to San Diego.
  12. And we'll throw fresh tomatoes at you if you're right!
  13. Lower right. Due north of the guy in the red underwear doing his laundry.
  14. G-Fafif wrote: The '73 NLCS cover is the '73 regular-season cover, except with an orange background. I thought it looked familiar! I went to a few regular season games at Shea that year, and surely got at least one scorecard. But I knew I didn't go to any post-season games in 1973. I eventually got a copy of the Yogi Berra World Series program as a back issue. Meanwhile, I see three different 2015 World Series covers. One that features the Mets, one the features the Royals, and one that shows both teams. Maybe the Mets version and the Royals version was the one you'd get at the ballpark, but the mixed version was for collectors who ordered online?
  15. batmagadanleadoff wrote: It's the same cover the Mets used for that year's regular season program. The old-timey element was a nod to 1869, as MLB was celebrating its centennial anniversary. Cheapass Wilpons couldn't even design a special cover for the 1969 NLCS! (Maybe they knew there would only be one game at Shea.)
  16. And here's the NLCS cover from 1973: And the more familiar 1973 World Series program: And, to show the other teams' perspectives:
  17. Wow. The Willard Mullin 1969 World Series program cover is so justifiably famous, I never realized that I was unfamiliar with the program cover from the 1969 NLCS. This is the one that the Mets used. It's an odd choice. Funny how the Braves went futuristic while the Mets went retro.
  18. It looks like somebody is going through Yearbook Cover Derby withdrawal during this week-long hiatus. Too bad you don't have the images for those two covers. Fortunately, I do have the cover of the 2093 yearbook. It nicely commemorates the 100th anniversary of the much-loved 1993 cover:
  19. In a 15 to 1 vote, the 1987 Revised Edition has eliminated the 1992 cover featuring Jeff Torborg and his new friends. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  20. I'll have to check the archives to see how this cover did in the 1962 Tabloid Cover Derby:
  21. Voting for the games played between April 9 and April 18 (against Miami, Milwaukee, and Washington) will close one week from today, on Monday, April 30. If you're on the list below with an 9 next to your name, you're all caught up on the games that are about to close. If not, and if you're so inclined, please try to get your votes in over the next week. 22. If he doesn't get his act together, and continues to pitch this badly, he doesn't deserve a spot, either in the rotation or the bullpen. He won't go to Vegas? Release him. This is his last year as a Met anyway. Maybe they'll get lucky and some team will claim him on waivers and take on his salary, though that's doubtful.
  23. Anyone care to break this tie?
  24. The 1984 cover is a little weird. The thing I most remember about it is a pimple on Keith Hernandez's nose. (Not noticeable in this image.) But a cover that just depicts equipment is, as we've seen, a sign of a team without stars. I'll vote for people (plus pimple) over bats.
