  1. Bumping this to the new page. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Cast your vote!
  2. I'm really not looking for Vargas to be spectacular. I want him to give us seven decent innings.
  3. Fman99 wrote: Very excited! My cable provider now, finally, is carrying SNY. It magically showed up in my channel guide today. Are you able to watch Mets games, or are they blacked out? I get SNY as part of my Verizon package, but I can't watch the games. I can watch the pre-game and the post-game, or SNY original programming (like Mets Hot Stove) but not the games.
  4. I really hope that Vargas gives us a boost in this department. I know it's far from a sure thing, but it's what I'm hoping for.
  5. Hopefully the Mets mash the Padres this weekend. Rattling off three wins would be really beneficial. And you have to make hay against the teams that carry the adjective of "lowly".
  6. We have our second unanimous winner. In the 29th poll of the first round, the 1988 cover received all 17 votes cast, thus eliminating the 1991 revised edition. Sorry, Vince and Hubie! ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  7. Well, I hate to say it, but there's Jeter...
  8. "I'm available if you need me to come in for a save in the 19th inning." -- Mike Pelfrey
  9. "A walk is as good as a hit" -- Jamie Reidy
  10. "This is a great chance for Nimmo to be a hero." -- Benjamin Grimm
  11. Maybe that's why there's no Seaver statue. The Mets are waiting for someone who really deserves one!
  12. Yeah, someone more like what Mike Schmidt was to the Phillies.
  13. I would say that 2,500 hits and 350 homers is not even close to Tom Seaver territory.
  14. "I've got spurs that jingle jangle jingle." -- Gene Autry
  15. I think right now Conforto has the best chance to be that guy, but so much has to go right that the odds have to be against him, as they would for any player at this early stage in his career.

In what would have been 13 full seasons, he would have passed 2,000 hits and would be close to 300 homers. Yes, but that's still a long way from Seaver territory. I'm very conservative when it comes to retiring uniform numbers, but I do think that David's 5 should be the next one retired. Even though Cooperstown isn't going to happen for him.
  17. It's true that a lot of players get a bad reputation based on the way they treat reporters (I think Eddie Murray was an example of that) but that's something I care nothing about. The rap on Seaver is that, while he does seem to appreciate the fans when he's on the field and they're in the stands, he's less appreciative of them when he's in a position to interact with them face-to-face. I can appreciate that someone going about his daily business doesn't always want to be bothered, but you can be polite about it or you can be rude about it. And from what I've heard, Seaver is often rude about it.
  18. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Give me Lugo. Oswald can pay some dues, and Gsellman seems better where he is, honestly. That's where I am with Gsellman, I think. He seems to have found his niche and I'd hate to disrupt that. A spot start for Oswalt would be interesting. I don't expect him to be spectacular or anything, but if Vargas can be a seven-inning pitcher instead of a five-inning pitcher, I think he'll be a big help.
  19. In hindsight, the winter after the 2015 season would have been the perfect time to trade Harvey. My personal plan for Harvey and the Mets would have been to trade him after the 2016 season, but as actual events have shown, that would have been too late.
  20. He wasn't. But there's certainly evidence that he was a different kind of jerk than Harvey is.
  21. A CLUE! I wonder what Blue wants to do with a hospital gown? I'd better go get my handy-dandy notebook! (I think this is how I responded the last time this photo was posted.)
  22. Cast your vote!
  23. Another day with no new polls, but with an old one closing. 1975 has defeated 2005 by a vote of 10 to 5. On Monday we'll see a new version of the brackets graphic, plus a final recap of the first round. Second-round voting will commence on Tuesday of next week. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
