Who's gonna be the General Manager?
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
Mike Puma wrote: The four known candidates at this point are former Rangers/Brewers GM Doug Melvin, Cardinals director player of development Gary LaRocque, MLB executive Kim Ng and Nationals special assistant De Jon Watson. All four are expected to receive an initial interview next week. Team owner Fred Wilpon’s preference, according to sources, continues to be a candidate with a deep background in scouting and player development. Melvin and LaRocque, both in their mid-60s, fit that profile. The 49-year-old Ng, a former assistant GM with the Yankees and Dodgers, would bring a blend of experience to the position. Watson, with 31 years of baseball experience, has a strong background in scouting and player development. Watson, 52, is African-American, so I'd think, oh, he's the token minority that the Mets have to interview, but I guess Ng would also fit that description? Or does minority mean "black" where this rule is concerned? I was wondering, by the way, how to pronounce "Ng". I asked Gary Cohen, and he said it's "Ning-or-reese" but I don't think I believe that. I did, however, find this: https://www.quora.com/How-do-you-pronounce-the-surname-Ng-1 I am a Mandarin speaker who has lived in Hong Kong for 10 years. “Ng†was one of the obstacles for learning Cantonese, even for Mandarin speakers because there is also no such sound in Mandarin. it is just a nasal sound, the best way for me to describe it is the “mmm†sound when people talk “ummmm†or “Mmmmmmâ€. An easy way to pronounce this is to close your lips, and stick your tip of tongue to the upper part of your mouth cavity behind the teeth (like the back gum area of upper teeth), and try exhaling through the nose. If you try to produce a sound instead of just exhaling, you should be able to produce the “Ng†sound. I'd like to think this is correct, but it's hard to imagine the guys on Mets Hot Stove talking to Kim Ng and pronouncing her name by doing what's described above. -

NorthJersey.com wrote: As first reported by NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey, the team's pool of candidates appears to be shrinking due to concerns by younger, analytics-oriented candidates that the team is not willing to be a forward-thinking organization. Team owner Fred Wilpon is not a big believer in analytics, and the Mets went against the analytics' staff recommendations last winter. https://www.northjersey.com/story/sports/mlb/mets/2018/10/05/ny-mets-interview-candidates-their-gm-opening-next-week/1536419002/ -

ALDS Rooting Interest - Astros vs. Indians
Benjamin Grimm replied to Centerfield's topic in New York Mets Talk
I agree about the Oakland part. I have no idea whether Houston is better than Cleveland or Cleveland is better than Houston, but it would be nice to see the Indians win a World Series. So I voted for Cleveland. But yes, the primary objective is to eliminate the Yankees as soon as possible. -

Who's gonna be the General Manager?
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
It won't be Ben Cherington, according to Andy Martino. https://www.sny.tv/mets/news/sources-ben-cherington-not-expected-to-interview-for-mets-job/296999382 He's happy in Toronto and not interested in being a GM at this time. -
THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2018 PLAYER OF THE YEAR The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2018 is JACOB deGROM, with 126.99 points. This is deGrom's third title in the last four years. His point total is the highest ever under the modern scoring system. He's the first player to top 100 points since Daniel Murphy in 2013. If deGrom had one more start, he would have just had to avoid getting shelled in order to pass Syndergaard. -
SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, SEPTEMBER 2018
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
But he still needed about 5.8 points in that last start, and he got 6. So a more ordinary start from Syndergaard on Sunday and deGrom would have swept. -

I'm rooting for a David Wright Comeback

I'm rooting for a David Wright Comeback
Benjamin Grimm replied to Centerfield's topic in New York Mets Talk
I think they're avoiding the use of the word "retire" so that David can get paid for 2019 and 2020. -
We're going to be in Syracuse for a long time.

Oops, you're right! I forgot what thread we were in! -
I hope they have a GM in place by around November 1. For them to do that, they need to move pretty quickly.

How about TWO box scores and TWO score cards? (It was a doubleheader.) http://leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=4075 http://leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=4076 -

Yeah, I think CF's point is that it's been a long time since we got a "Holy Shit!" kind of guy. Like Beltran. Or Santana.
-
I see that the Oakland starting pitcher for tonight's game only pitched 24 innings in 2018! He's started 8 games, usually going about 1 or 2 innings. I guess this is a "bullpen game". If I was an Oakland fan (and I guess I am for one night) that would make me pretty uneasy.

Who's gonna be the General Manager?
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
First up: Doug Melvin Mets kicking off GM search with longtime baseball exec Mike Puma wrote: The Mets’ general manager search will include at least one name with extensive experience in the position. Doug Melvin, the former Rangers and Brewers GM, has been contacted by the Mets and will interview with club officials either this week or next, according to an industry source. The 66-year-old Melvin has been serving as a senior adviser to the Brewers, who clinched the NL Central title on Monday. -
Maybe to ease the pressure she can be a woman on even-numbered days and an Asian on odd-numbered days.
-
I think his name is the one I've seen the most speculation about.
-
Lynn and Cobb are the names I remember hearing last year.
