Thanks! The field is now officially closed. Today was the last day to get an entry in for the 2020 Derby. Starting tomorrow, any new covers will, as you anticipated, be put aside for 2021. To have the first round end on a Friday I cleverly posted the first of the 16 polls on a Friday, then took the weekend off. This year's Derby has the fewest covers ever, only 204, breaking the record set in 2017 when there were 208 covers. 2017 and 2020 are the only years with only 16 first-round polls. The New York Post, our only publication to yet win a title, was more aggressive this year. They have 83 of the 204 covers, while the Daily News has 72 and last year's champ, Newsday, has only 49. This is the first time that the News hasn't provided the most covers. =G-Fafif post_id=51109 time=1605901409 user_id=55] The limited history of Mets named Sam: Two joined in 1962 — Sammy Taylor and Sammy Drake. Then none until 2019: Sam Haggerty. Plus a couple of Samuel(s) as last names — Amado and Juan (the former was referred to in his time as Sammy; the latter is best referred to rarely if at all). Sam Perlozzo coached a few seasons. Charlie Samuels prowled the clubhouse forever. Joe Sambito is over there with McEwing, Pignatano and the regular Joes.

I remembered Stone and Theodore immediately, and Altman very shortly after. I forgot all about Foster, the Mets' most prominent George, completely. I didn't realize I had overlooked him until I looked it up. Sheesh.

=Centerfield post_id=51054 time=1605833318 user_id=65] For those that feel a grown man shouldn't wear another man's name on his back, what if that name is also your name?

He would be only the fifth Mets player named George, assuming you count Seaver as a "Tom".

I had to look up "suplex"

I wonder if they could get him with more money (average annual value) and fewer years? Or if that would be a good idea. Something to think about anyway.

All things considered, if the Mets are playing an official game on April 1, I'll be delighted no matter who is in the booth.

I voted Springer and Bauer.

I think they're going to get this done. Seven years, $180 million.

There are primarily five "big names" that are being discussed as possible Mets in 2021. This is a PREDICTION thread, not a preference thread. Which combination of possibilities do you think will come to pass this offseason.

I agree. If Tomas Nido is the one weak spot in the lineup, we'll still be okay. And I expect they'll find someone a bit better than Nido.

I think he's going to be the one that gets away, but who knows?

The guys on Mets Hot Stove tonight seem to agree that Bauer should be the Mets' top free agent target. And really, after what we saw last season, a kick ass starter would probably provide the biggest impact.

Maybe he was trying to improve his chances of getting 3,000 hits?

Yeah, I'd rather have a 162-game season and Cano back on Opening Day 2022. Cohen can eat his contract anyway. Cano is no longer the albatross he had been.

I guess if the 2021 season has fewer than 162 games on its schedule, the suspension can extend into 2022?

Do the Mets now consider someone like Kolten Wong? Or do they fill the position internally with McNeil or Gimenez? I wish they had a GM (I assume Sandy is acting in the role for now) and a decision on whether or not there will be a DH.

I saw some speculation somewhere that Steve Cohen can get Theo to change his mind by offering him an ownership stake in the team. Apparently that's been Steve's MO at Point72 and Theo had expressed a desire to get that kind of a deal from the Cubs but was rebuffed.

Lefty Specialist wrote: A huge Steve Cohen popping out of the Home Run Hat is, well, kinda creepy. Are you referring to the News cover, the Post cover, or both? I think the Post cover is creepier!
