  3. [bIGPURPLE]FINAL REMINDER![/bIGPURPLE] The first seventeen games that were played in July are about to be officially tallied. Please try to get any remaining votes submitted some time in the next 48 hours. 5. So yeah, when we get to the point where we're tracking a magic number over the Braves or Phillies, we'll also be looking at a magic number over the Cardinals or Brewers.
  6. It's a best-of-three, and the division winner hosts all three games. Still bad, but not as bad as it could have been.
  7. Remember when Barry Larkin almost became a Met? This is from July 23, 2000. Larkin's 2000 season would end on August 27. He came out of the game after dislocating a joint in his left middle finger while striking out against Atlana's Ryan Dempster. He was initially listed as day-to-day (happens a lot, huh?) but he actually was done for the season. http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00050.jpg>
  8. The bye is certainly worth playing for. But if your point is that being the third-best first-place team is only marginally better than being the wild card, I agree. The difference between being the third-best first-place team and being the best wild-card team is almost nothing at all. (Potentially one extra home game each in the LDS and in the LCS, if you get that far?)

  10. Poll runs for two days. Let's see how optimistic or pessimistic we are.
  11. =smg58 post_id=100942 time=1658774440 user_id=62] So doesn't the UMDB rank Mets by body mass index?

  15. Sid Fernandez, natch.
  16. They gave him a defective cap.
  17. I've never watched Home Run Derby, so forgive my ignorance. Are there really a bunch of ten-year-olds milling about in the outfield during the Derby? Why are they there? And if they're really there, why is Mushnick out of touch to suggest that they might be in danger?

  19. I was a little weirded out by how frequently Joe McDonald referred to Orosco as "the boy".
  20. Blasts From the Past: Special "Mettle" Edition! The winner of the "Name the Mule" contest was to be awarded a week at spring training the following year. However, by spring of 1980 the deRoulet family was out of the picture and the club was owned by Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon. I hope they honored the commitment made by the previous owners. http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00044.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00045.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00046.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00047.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00048.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/clippings/00049.jpg>
  21. Were these games originally part of the schedule, or are they makeups because of the delayed start of the season?
  22. What's up with the Mets "acting as agents for the Cleveland Indians"?
  23. Yeah, unless we get similar reports from better sources, I'm not going to give this any credence.
  24. Why? Because the Mets just drafted a catcher?
  25. I had someone post to the UMDB Facebook page that the site is missing a Mets player: Jerry Robertson. I've known for over 20 years that nobody is missing, but I checked anyway. Apparently the poster was basing his claim on this baseball card: https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71/71-651Fr.jpg> https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71/71-651Bk.jpg> Robertson was acquired by the Mets from the Tigers prior to the 1971 season in exchance for Bill Denehy and Dean Chance. He spent the 1971 season with the Tides and then his career ended at the age of 27. I had never seen this card before, but it really brought me back. Sometimes I would see a Mets baseball card and wonder who the hell the player was that was pictured. This card definitely would have fallen into that category, along with the 1971 Dean Chance and the 1973 Phil Hennigan. By the way, I like how they used the same photo on the front of the card and the back, but they didn't bother with the Mets' NY insignia on the front of the card. They didn't even try to get the right shade of blue for the cap.
