Happy Outcome!

And the protection is from a guy who's 0 for 6 in his big league career.

It's really not much effort, but thanks for the appreciation!

I suppose I would have to classify him as a position player in the UMDB. It would allow him to earn points in both categories. But yeah, he would complicate things.

No, no decision was made. It's the way the Schaefer software works. Other than creating the baseball cards and the end-of-month posts, everything it totally automated. To close out a game I click a button and the code does all the tallying. Bench points are given to any position player who earns points in a game in which he's not in the starting lineup. Reliever points are given to anyone, pitcher or not, who pitches in the game after the starter has exited. I see a gap here... If Jacob deGrom were to pinch-hit a game-winning three-run homer, he wouldn't get bench points, although he should. But that's so unlikely and I'm not going to invest the time to fix it for a project that only about a half-dozen people participate in. If Schaefer took any real effort I wouldn't be doing it.

Yesterday was almost a complete disaster. Only one Happy Outcome, a loss by the Cardinals, which is definitely of lesser importance than the other outcomes. Six Unhappy Outcomes: A loss by the Mets and wins by the Dodgers, Braves, Phillies, Padres, and Brewers. A 1969 deGrom! A 1980 deGrom! (One guesses Jake exhausted the Seventies models pre-scapula.) A 1967 Diaz/Trumpet in the best tradition of METS MAULERS! Comfort zones have been exploded or at least expanded. Yes, the only 1970s year for which there hasn't yet been a deGrom card was 1977. Sometimes I reuse existing cards, but the ones with the long hair seem kind of dated now so I'm less likely to reuse them, so yes, I expanded the parameters a bit. The Diaz/Trumpet card is the second time I've dipped into 1967, but the first time for Schaefer. The other time was when David Wright tied Ed Kranepool for all-time leader in base hits. http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/MetsHitKings.jpg> As you can see, there have been a lot of deGrom cards! http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1969.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1970.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1971.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/2018ERALeaders.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1972.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1972boyhood.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/2020_NL_Strikeout_Leaders.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1973.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1974.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1975.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1976.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1978.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1979.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1979RecordBreaker.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/cards/JacobdeGrom1980.jpg>

Mississippi, a state that apparently doesn't have a proper appreciation for football, was the 20th state, entering the Union on December 10, 1817. https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-mississippi-vintage-greeting-card-online-16549_47.jpg>

The final player in this quiz is James Loney, who played first base in the one-and-done Wild Card game in 2016. Nolan Ryan (1969 Mets, 1986 Astros) George Stone (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Felix Millan (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Jesse Orosco (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) Danny Heep (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) David Cone (1988 Mets, 2000 Yankees) Orel Hershiser (1988 Dodgers, 1999 Mets) Lenny Harris (1999 Diamondbacks, 2000 Mets) Shawon Dunston (1999 Mets, 2000 Cardinals) Tom Glavine (1999 Braves, 2006 Mets) James Loney (2006 Dodgers, 2016 Mets)

It's an unearned run. It's scored as if the runner reached base on an error. The Run and the RBI count in the stats.

Maybe or maybe not, but he's not our guy. We're looking for a corner infielder. Mid-season acquisition who then left after the season was over.

Nolan Ryan (1969 Mets, 1986 Astros) George Stone (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Felix Millan (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Jesse Orosco (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) Danny Heep (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) David Cone (1988 Mets, 2000 Yankees) Orel Hershiser (1988 Dodgers, 1999 Mets) Lenny Harris (1999 Diamondbacks, 2000 Mets) Shawon Dunston (1999 Mets, 2000 Cardinals) Tom Glavine (1999 Braves, 2006 Mets) Only the most obscure player remains. Position player. African American. (I think!) Played one post-season game with the Mets.

Harris yes, Strawberry no. Nolan Ryan (1969 Mets, 1986 Astros) George Stone (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Felix Millan (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Danny Heep (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) David Cone (1988 Mets, 2000 Yankees) Orel Hershiser (1988 Dodgers, 1999 Mets) Lenny Harris (1999 Diamondbacks, 2000 Mets) Shawon Dunston (1999 Mets, 2000 Cardinals) Tom Glavine (1999 Braves, 2006 Mets) One pitcher remains, one who is extremely iconic in Mets postseason history, and one much more recent position player, who's deservedly forgotten.

Shawon Dunston yes, Doc Gooden, no. Nolan Ryan (1969 Mets, 1986 Astros) George Stone (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Felix Millan (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Danny Heep (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) David Cone (1988 Mets, 2000 Yankees) Orel Hershiser (1988 Dodgers, 1999 Mets) Shawon Dunston (1999 Mets, 2000 Cardinals) Tom Glavine (1999 Braves, 2006 Mets) Like Shawon Dunston, our other two remaining position players are African American, but our pitcher is not.

We still have one very prominent pitcher (who was at Old Timers Day) and three easier-to-forget position players. All three of them appeared in 1999 or later.

Nolan Ryan (1969 Mets, 1986 Astros) George Stone (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Felix Millan (1969 Braves, 1973 Mets) Danny Heep (1986 Mets, 1988 Dodgers) David Cone (1988 Mets, 2000 Yankees) Orel Hershiser (1988 Dodgers, 1999 Mets) Tom Glavine (1999 Braves, 2006 Mets)
