Bill Gallo wrote a nice column about Jack Lang in Sunday's Daily News. Apparently Lang got his start by sending in box scores of sandlot games to his local paper, The Long Island Press.

If I remember right, HoJo had an H but Davey didn't have a D. I voted for HoJo's number to be 50-something. Bud Harrelson had to wear 53 back in the day because Rafael Santana was already wearing 3. And I think Mookie Wilson had to wear 51 because (somebody) was wearing 1 at the time. If Buddy and Mookie couldn't seize their traditional numbers, I doubt that HoJo will.

I used to live very close to Northport. It was just two stops on the LIRR from Smithtown.

As a kid, it seemed like there was this place all the way out in california where there were Mets was just the coolest thing. Never been to Visalia (which I think is an fruit & veggie-growing town in central Cally) but would still like to go, even if (as I suspect) there is nothing to see there. I was looking at a California map a few weeks ago, doing some early planning for a possible summer vacation trip. If I remember correctly, Visalia is near some of the national parks like Yosemite and Sequoia. So I might actually visit Visalia this year. It does seem strange to see Mets affiliates so far to the west. (Grays Harbor, by the way, is in Washington State. Mankato is in Minnesota.) Another recent trend is teams trying to get their affiliates closer to home, at least within the same time zone. It's funny that that's happening now, when travel is easier. You'd think it would have been more of a concern 40 years ago. This collecting of afflilates is a step towards an even larger goal, of getting minor-league rosters, as well as some stats, on the UMDB. It might one day be possible to see at least the name, and maybe even the records, of everyone who ever played in the Mets organization. I was able to get some numbers and names electronically, and they'll be posted before long. For the rest, it will be slow going, and only as time and motivation permits. I may put out a call for volunteers, so if anyone's interested in doing some data keying as part of this ambitious goal, I'd be glad for whatever contributions you'd be willing to make.

Vic Sage wrote: Are you saying the Mets have no rookie league teams this year? Or simply that they haven't announced their rookie league affiliations yet? They'll have Rookie League teams. Probably Kingsport and Gulf Coast again. I haven't posted it yet because I'm not sure it's official, although it may be.

It actually goes back farther than that. I have an updated list that I can post. Please hold...

I wasn't sure if the Mets were still going to be in Kingsport. I did know about Savannah, though. I wasn't sure of the history of the Gulf Coast Mets. Are they the same as the Sarasota Mets, but only with a different name? (Maybe so. My 1989 yearbook mentions the Sarasota Mets.)

I'm compiling a history of Mets affiliates for the UMDB, and I've been using old Sporting News Baseball Guides and yearbooks as sources. Since soupcan posted a yearbook thread today, I thought I'd share what I have so far in case anyone is interested in helping me fill in some of the gaps. (Note: in 1962 the Mets actually shared the Syracuse Chiefs with the Washington Senators. Also, as far as I can determine, the Mets didn't get their first AA team until 1964. I believe I have a complete list of AAA and AA teams, it's just the A and Rookie teams that still need to be completed.) I was also surprised that Borat was in the "adapted" category. I guess it's because it's based on a character he played on Da Ali G Show. I'm wondering why Letters from Iwo Jima isn't in the foreign language category. Isn't it just about entirely in Japanese? (I'm really looking forward to seeing that one, by the way.)

Keep in mind that if Mr. Met pulls a hamstring or something, that giant rodent will be prancing around on the dugouts at Shea.

Maybe you're only seeing the second of the two cards, Edgy. The first card has a hologram that's clearly Don Mattingly.

I wonder, how big is the figure in that mural? I'd love to see a picture with a person in front of it, so we could get a sense of scale. We know the wall is 16 feet tall, and Stephenson's picture at most takes up half the height, since we see parts of other players to his left and right. I'd guess the picture is roughly life size.

Very cool. If I'm ever in Portsmouth, Ohio I want to have my picture taken in front of that mural.

He did. At first I thought he brought nothing to the table, but by season's end I was able to see some value in what he did. But after I read his name in this thread it took me a while to remember who he was. Actually, until Johnny mentioned sideline reporting, I thought we were talking about the fat guy who did sports for Imus.

You'd think a historian of the game would know that.

="Willets Point"]The Yankees, because they're going to win it all this year in dominating fashion. You say that every year.

I haven't been following the story closely at all, but I thought I saw a headline saying that they were making progress on the stadium issue in Miami. Anyone know?

If anything, I think I'm more fearing a return to mediocrity on the part of the Mets than any particular opponent. What the Cardinals do doesn't matter so much, since they're in another division. If they tank, it's one less Wild Card opponent, but at this point anyway I have my eyes set on the division title. And if the Mets make the playoffs they'll have an opponent who had a good season, and whether that opponent is the Cardinals or someone else is a concern for October. The larger danger is if the Phillies or Marlins or even the Braves have an almost-everything-goes-right kind of year. At least one of those teams will probably have some success. We'll have to see if it's enough success to derail the Mets.

A Whiz Kid in Philadelphia, huh? That should bring back memories.
