  1. Yeah, and what they have to say is rarely of much interest anyway. Chris Russo is a guy who's making big money, and he thinks we want to complain about how difficult his job is. I really don't care to hear media guys talking about how athletes don't cater to the media guys.
  2. I was thinking Reyes for Gotay. I wasn't thinking that Gotay would hit for himself.
  3. It was pretty close. The ball squirted out of the first baseman's glove, so the safe call was automatic. I think he would have been called safe anyway, but it WAS close.

  6. Lance Johnson is one of the three. Claudell Washington isn't.
  7. Aflac trivia: Only three players in MLB history have played for the Mets, Yankees, Cubs, and White Sox. Name them. First name that comes to mind is Claudell Washington, but I'm not sure that he was ever a Cub.
  8. Carlos Gomez is number 811 and Jason Vargas is number 812. (That's the area code for Southern Indiana, by the way.)
  9. ="Wallace Matthews"]The Mets are far from the squeaky-clean organization their owner and his kid would have you believe. And who knows how much further the story will go once the music starts playing for Kirk Radom- ski, former Shea laundry boy turned federal drug informant? In fact, listening to Kid Wilpon, it sure sounded as if the Mets' concern was not so much eliminating steroids as it was eliminating positive steroids tests. "We like to be a stand-up organization and keep a real good eye on it to try to educate our kids," he said. "I have a call later with the nutritionist to see, are we doing anything wrong, can we do anything better to try to help these young men so they don't test positive. Ouch. It really is hard to put a positive spin on resigning Mota to a two-year deal after he had tested positive, and structuring the contract so that he wouldn't be pinched financially by his suspension. Bad move, and it's going to be made worse by bad timing, as Mota's return is almost simultaneous with the start of Urdaneta's suspension.
  10. Don't post fake votes and I won't delete them. Voting for Tuesday night's 10-1 loss against the Cubs will close on Friday morning: http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=6364
  11. I think Mackey Shillstone is down at the Water Buffalo Lodge with Fred, Barney, and Joe Rockhead.

  15. Huge hitcount day for Sid Fernandez today. I was afraid he either died or got arrested. Turns out there's a link to his UMDB page on Howard Stern's web site: http://www.howardstern.com/rundown.hs
  16. Whatever happened to Patchy anyway? Is he in the Secret Forum?
  17. Paste Pot Pete and the Trapster are the same guy. (After a few appearances in Strange Tales he realized he needed a better name and a costume.) I think the name change came in FF #36, the first time the Frightful Four got together. The evil FF had three previously seen characters: The Wizard and Pete, who had teamed up in Strange Tales, and the Sandman who up to that point was (I think) just a Spidey villain. The fourth member of the team was a brand new character, the mysterious lady known as Medusa. When the Wizard found her she wasn't living with the Inhumans. Instead she was living in a cave, wearing a yellow dress, and using her hair to toss the locals around. (Gosh, I love that old Lee and Kirby stuff!) I was talking about this with my son the other day. Now that so many Marvel characters have been (or soon will be) on the big screen, it would be cool if they started to tie it together into an onscreen Marvel universe. Having the Torch in the next Spidey movie would be a good way to start.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: Does this mean the official record has a GDP but the retroboys have gone back and corrected the discrepancy in their own records? And how does the doubleplay happen here. If the runner was on first, wouldn't the pitcher have more easily thrown out Hoak by forcing him at first, rather than tossing to second for a tag? From what Retrosheet told me when I reported a caught-stealing error regarding Ed Kranepool, they are planning on collecting and noting the instances when the official record differs from the box scores. Just from my own UMDB experience, which is a small but not insignificant sample size, the official stats started getting it right some time in the mid 60's.
  19. That May 1 Delgado out included some luck on the part of the Marlins. As I remember it, the throw was way off line, but it happened to reach the catcher right at the point where Delgado was, maybe 15 feet from the plate. If Carlos had been half a step quicker the throw would have been behind him and he would have scored easily.
