  1. I was at that Old Timers Day game! (What year would that have been?)
  2. Derek Jeter: You KNOW he has an Edge!
  3. There was an item in The Philadelphia Inquirer today that ex-Met (and ex-Phillie) Gary Bennett is having Mackey Sasser-like throwing problems for the Dodgers.
  4. And if Church goes on the DL for 15 days, who gets his playing time? I'm somewhat tempted to give Fernando Martinez a taste of honey for a couple of weeks (like they did with Milledge a couple of years ago) but last I heard, Martinez was injured as well. Hopefully Pagan is ready to come back. He's the best alternative.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. They could get a change-of-scenery guy. I think a better course would be to ask him to accept a temporary demotion to New Orleans. It helped Steve Trachsel back in '01 or '02 and may be helpful to Heilman now. It's worth a shot. He seems lost out there, and right now I'd only be comfortable using him in lopsided games.
  6. I think he has his thumb stuck in a bowling ball.
  7. Centerfield wrote: I nearly forgot about El Duque. Where is he? Is he coming back ever? I haven't been following this too closely, but as I understand it, there's some kind of a boot that's stuck on his foot, and he can't pitch until he figures out how to get it off.
  8. metirish wrote: As discussed during the game last night by Ron and Gary how can Pedro come back to pitch for the Mets as soon as next week without pitching to some semblance of real talent in the minors first Why not? Pitchers used to do it all the time, before this "minor league rehab" thing came into vogue. Jerry Koosman, for example, missed a big chunk of time in 1971 and came back right to the rotation without pitching in Tidewater or Pompano Beach.
  9. Yeah, I think if he manages to finish with a strong four months, his competitive juices will make him want to return for 2009. Whether his return is with the Mets is a whole nuther story, though. The only scenario I can envision that has him returning to the Mets in 2009 is if he really pitches great the rest of the way (which is a large part wishful thinking) and is willing to come back on a contract that doesn't guarantee more than one year. And I think it's unlikely, but possible, that it will play out that way.
  10. Oops. I misplaced an L.
  11. Don't rule out the possibility of the Mets getting four months of service from Pedro this year. There's still a chance that he'll be the difference between paying in October and not playing in October.

  16. mario25 wrote: Why would you play Schneider against the lefty in the first game and Castro against the righty the second game?? Maybe he was looking at his catchers as catchers, and not as hitters. (I don't know; just speculating.) Willie might have preferred Schneider with Maine and Castro with Vargas. mario25 wrote: Why not sit Delgado against Glavine the first game? He can barely hit righties now and he is awful against lefties. Delgado does have a good track record against Glavine, but of course, the last time Delgado faced Glavine he was still in his prime.
  17. Gooden? If you retire Gooden, you have to retire Strawberry. (I say neither, by the way.)
  18. Wheelhouse and Loudmouths look awful too. Can't a sports station fill its non-game time with stuff other than idiots shouting?
  19. I doubt that Clemens will be a first-ballot guy, given his recent misadventures. He may eventually get in (although I hope not) but I doubt that Piazza will be sharing his day with Clemens. Or with Bonds for that matter.
  20. B. Jones? You're taking the piss, right?
  21. I don't see it. I really don't. I'd give 31 to the next journeyman reliever, and never have a single regret.
  22. I doubt you would have gotten much excitement out of the 1986 Championship if you had been born four months earlier. When I think of how many Cubs and Red Sox and White Sox fans went from cradle to grave without seeing their team win a World Series, I'm very grateful that I have 1986 in my back pocket. (I was alive in 1969, and aware that the Mets had won a World Series, but it didn't mean anything to me. I knew it made my grandfather happy, though, and that thought is what led me to start caring about the Mets about a year and a half later.)
  23. Just making sure the boy has his priorities in order.
  24. I think it was the first big Mets transaction that I learned about on the Internet.
  25. Sorry. Seaver deserves it, Piazza doesn't. Piazza only had about three and a half good seasons with the Mets. For half of his time with the Mets, he was in decline. And what about the generation that had Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden posters on their bedroom walls? They're not getting to gaze at a retired number on the wall, and I think they're managing to get on with their lives. Don't envy us our 41 on the wall, Valadius. Instead, envy us our World Championship.
