  1. The Mets have been shutout three times in a row three times: September 1963, June 1975, and July 1992. None of those were series sweeps.
  2. September 1969 against the Phillies: 5-0, 1-0, 2-0. (And prior to those three games, they beat the Cardinals 6-0. That was the only time they ever had four shutouts in a row.) They had three in a row five times, once earlier that same September, then again in May of 1970, June of 1984, May of 1985, and April of 1988. But none of those were series sweeps.

  4. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Radio guys say Wright's reaching by error was a tough score and that he prolly deserved a single. TV guys agreed. Wright really smacked that pitch. Maine's up to 80 pitches with 2 out in the fourth.
  5. Two run double for Tatis! 3-0 Mets! (Beltran ignores Aguayo's stop sign and scores the third run.)
  6. Beltran, for some reason, does the unorthodox and instead of taking a called third strike, like he does in EVERY OTHER AT BAT, singles home the go-ahead run.
  7. And which of those guys opened Al Capone's empty vault on national television?
  8. Ralph Kiner in the booth! He's looking dapper in his SNY shirt.
  9. This is, I think, the third blue-cap day in a row. No pinstripes, though.
  10. According to Heyman, Rivera is hitting .194 for the Angels.

I once flew with a bad cold and it left me nearly deaf for a day or so. It wouldn't have occurred to me not to let Church fly with a concussion, but after he said it bothered him after that Atlanta-Denver flight, I would not have had him fly again. But he kept flying with the team. He kept getting on planes and every time it made him feel worse. I can forgive them that first flight. But once he felt the effects, it should have been ground transportation only from that point forward.
  12. I remember in 2006 posting something that said, more or less, "Chris Cotter brings nothing to the table." He would just sit and talk to fans who had nothing to say. But I have to give props to Kevin Burkhardt. He's been a much better sideline reporter than Cotter was, and he actually provides substance. I had thought that sideline reporters were lame, but I now realize that only lame sideline reporters are lame.
  13. That's true. If I was his agent, that flight from Atlanta to Denver would have been Church's last until he recovered. My biggest beef (and I mentioned it around here a few times) was how the Mets kept putting that poor guy in airplanes.
  14. Jon Heyman is saying on SNY (right now!) that the Mets might pursue Juan Rivera of the Angels.
  15. Well, yes. But he also has financial incentive to do so. (The more money Church makes, the more money the agent makes.) I can't imagine the agent being held liable for anything, unless he willfully caused Church to ignore medical advice. But you can't blame him for not being smarter than the doctors.

For the record, though, we're sticking with "Reyes" for Jose, but AReyes for Argenis. (I think most of us have been correctly voting that way.)
  17. ="attgig"]that's safeco. Yeah. The Orioles are wearing grey, and the Seattle outfielder has white pants. Fernando Martinez isn't the Mets only trade chip. He might be required to bring back a star, but I'd be satisfied with someone who's somewhere between Carlos Beltran and Endy Chavez.
  18. This smells like a pretty weak lineup then. My guess, as of 10:30 a.m.: J.Reyes ss Chavez rf Wright 3b Beltran cf Delgado 1b Schneider c A. Reyes 2b Evans lf Maine p Not too imposing. I guess the saving grace here is that the Mets are playing a team that tends to score zero runs per game.
  19. Even that would require me paying too much attention. I think my TV has picture-in-picture, but I've never looked into it. I'm learning that we all have our own ways of watching TV, and what's wonderful for one person is a hassle for another.
  20. It seems that baseball broadcasts have always suffered from high repetition in commercials. I would think that if you watched an hour of a prime-time hit show, like Grey's Anatomy or CSI you might not see any commercials more than once, or maybe twice, in the hour. (I'm just guessing here.) But during a baseball broadcast you'll often see the same commercial in every (or every other) inning break. When we were young, my sister and I would practically recite the Garcia Y Vega cigar commercials every time they aired. And I also recall a few Oldsmobile commercials that played again and again.
  21. It would suck if the Mets beat the Giants' two best starters, and then lost to the awful one. Argenis Reyes has played well enough that I won't begrudge him a start, but having him and Evans in the lineup on the same day might weaken the lineup too much. Hopefully Castro starts instead of Schneider. I think I'd put Argenis in the second slot, so we don't have a relative dead zone of A. Reyes/Evans/Maine.
  22. They really need to come off that position that they'll replace Church and Alou from within. It's entirely possible that neither one will be back at all this year. (I hope that's not the case, especially for Church, but it is possible.) Endy's been doing a nice job lately, but how far will this team go with him as their second-best outfielder? And a lot of starts from guys like Evans and Anderson and Tatis? They really do need to make a move, and they have three weeks left before the July 31 deadline.
  23. I thought this part was particularly interesting: ]Manuel Wednesday spoke about a couple of things he has changed since ascending to the throne. He is making an effort to keep his players' heads late in games by being more aggressive, looking for the extra run instead of sitting on three-run leads. Manuel said he was simply following the example of managers such as Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa. "They take over the game at that time for the fourth run," Manuel said. "Get ready for the hit-and-run, regardless of what the score is. That keeps the offense focused on the game." It pretty much implies that the Mets inability to get "tack on" runs for much of the season was because Willie Randolph would take his foot off the gas pedal. I'm not sure how much weight to give that; it's not like Willie would tell his players not to try to hit the ball, but it's something to ponder.
  24. I can't always do it with baseball games, since they're the only TV I ever watch "live", but since the advent of the VCR (and now TiVo) most of everything I watch, including some baseball games, are time-shifted, so I can fast-forward through commercials. In other words, the only commercials I'm even aware of at all are those that are on SNY during Mets games. So I do know about Giuseppe Franco, and the Edge, and Beer Money. But I'd say that about a third of the time I'm zapping through them.
  25. Voting for Tuesday night's Freak-defeating 7-0 shutout of the Giants will close on Friday morning: Schaefer POTG 7/8/08 - Mets 7, Giants 0
