Schaefer voting to resume on Monday
Benjamin Grimm replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
="metsmarathon":3h6kja3v]do we have any naming concerns this year?[/quote:3h6kja3v] It doesn't look like it. Livan Hernandez will simply be "Hernandez" since Orlando and Anderson are both gone. And we're also down to only one Reyes. Pedro is gone, so there won't be a conflict if Fernando Martinez is called up. And the potential clash between Ivan and Francisco Rodriguez never came to fruition. MFS62 Apr 06 2009 08:02 AM ="metsmarathon":2sg3228r]do we have any naming concerns this year?[/quote:2sg3228r] Yes. Naming Benjamin Grimm as our "spokesmodel". Later A Boy Named Seo Apr 06 2009 10:07 AM I love this thing, but I've been too lazy to participate since the first year. I'm gonna try again this year. Great work on it as always, Grimm. Benjamin Grimm Apr 06 2009 11:21 AM Thank you. That's how I managed to be named spokesmodel. Kong76 Apr 06 2009 12:11 PM Must See TV: Rockin' Doc Apr 06 2009 03:43 PM I love Schaefer's slogan, "Schaefer the beer to have when you're having more than one". That would never fly into today's ("Please drink responsibly") age of marketing.* *Please do not misinterpret this post as advocating reckless and irresponsible drinking. I fully endorse moderation and the use of designated drivers by those that choose to consume alcoholic beverages. This post was merely made to point out how dramatically advertising slogans have changed in this age of litigation and political correctness. This post was merely made to point out how dramatically advertising slogans have changed in this age of litigation and political correctness. Hell, they're slogan WAS changed during the last few years of existence. From the day I started listening to the Mets in 1986, to the last time they air radio ads the line was "Schaefer the beer to have when you're out to have some fun!" -
Looks like the makings of a miserable day in Cincinnati. ="National Weather Service":hfb5us99]Today: Rain and snow showers likely, mainly after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 40. I am still trying to decide if I want to split early to go home and watch the game... Benjamin Grimm Apr 06 2009 08:04 AM Hard to say. My hunch, as worthless as it is, is that they will play, since tomorrow's forecast also looks pretty miserable. Maybe the game will have a delayed start. HahnSolo Apr 06 2009 08:20 AM Agree they will try to give it a go. Only trip to Cincy this year as well. Fman99 Apr 06 2009 08:49 AM Red Sox v. Rays in Boston also cancelled. Fman99 Apr 06 2009 10:15 AM Eff it. Taking the PM off and driving home to watch the game. See you all in the IGT! If there's a delay I can always take a nap... A Boy Named Seo Apr 06 2009 10:17 AM Atta boy. Frayed Knot Apr 06 2009 10:23 AM 37 degrees currently - heading for a high of 39 (around 2PM) 13 mph wind out of the northwest A Boy Named Seo Apr 06 2009 10:24 AM Ick. Rockin' Doc Apr 06 2009 11:21 AM Sounds more like football weather. I can be fun watching the pros struggle in such adverse conditions. I hope they can get the game in. Gwreck Apr 07 2009 09:22 AM In the end, aside from the cold, the periodic rain, and occasional hail it was a pretty good day for baseball. I did doze for 20 minutes or so and missed an inning (the 6th) but it was an entertaining game, with a great ending.

]Voting for the 2009 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Monday, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the fifth season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright was the winner in the first three years of the revived prize, and pitcher Johan Santana won in 2008. A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, and Relief Pitcher of the Month will be named. Voters are asked to adhere to a specific format, which is outlined at http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/6200/f9_t6278.shtml

Wait... what about Todd Zeile? Don't I remember you calling him TILF?
-
Well, it's not like Shea had a whole bunch of them either. Maybe instead we'll get an extra Cy Young or two.

I swear, sportswriting has reached a level of insanity I never would have imagined. Here's a fun fact about Gary Sheffield: He was the Comeback Player of the Year... in 1992! Seventeen years ago!
-
Ray Knight looks like he's squeezing out a fart.
-
That photo is even more gay than the one of Alex Rodriguez snogging his reflection in the mirror.
-
I resolve to send a box of candy and a basket of fresh fruit to any sportswriter who leaves Jeter unchecked on his Hall-of-Fame ballot.
-
Keeping a guy even though he sucks is more likely when you're on the hook for a big contract. Since the Mets will be paying Sheffield the minimum salary, that shouldn't be a problem.

Here's what David Lennon is saying in Newsday: ]The Mets have contacted Gary Sheffield directly to gauge his interest in coming to New York and a person familiar with the situation said today that he could sign with a club as soon as tonight. Sheffield worked out yesterday at a college field in Tampa, as first reported by SI.com, and the Mets are considered to be his first choice, with the Phillies and Reds also showing interest. Note that he could sign with a club as soon as tonight.

He hit .225 last year. (He OBP'ed .326 and slugged .400.) 16 doubles and 19 homers in 418 at bats. Walked 58 times, struck out 83 times. Nothing special at all about that. No way would I sit Murphy and stall his progress for a year just to give some aging malcontent a shot at a milestone home run. He can replace Anderson if he wants, but not Murphy.

I'm still skeptical. His personality aside (for a moment) if he's willing to be a pinch-hitter, reserve player, then that's one thing. But if he's looking to take a job away from Daniel Murphy or Ryan Church, that's another.
