Can't be more annoying than Joe Morgan. At least tonight the Yankees are actually playing so he can talk about them without asking why is he talking about Derek Jeter and the Yankees. The mental image of Papelbon (after running up the steps and throwing his cap to the ground in what looked like a steroid-enhanced rage) turning, looking around, and ultimately knocking Pedroia to the ground and dry-humping him like a furious chihuahua is pretty funny. Edgy DC Jun 28 2009 08:57 PM Exactly like the chihuahuas. I didn't want to say explicitly.
  4. Just finished watching on Sunday Morning Baseball. (Thanks, TiVo!) What a fabulous game. If that ninth inning happened in the postseason we'd still be talking about it 30 years from now.
  5. I'm also jumping off the "get rid of Ramon Martinez" bandwagon. And I certainly hope they don't send Santos down to Buffalo to make room for Brian Schneider.
  6. I haven't really been paying attention to this story. Are people seeing the home runs as a problem? (By "people" I mean two categories: idiot Yankee fans and the rest of the baseball world.) We've seen other organizations take steps to make their ballparks less homer-happy. (I'm thinking of the Phillies and the Rockies.) But I'm not sure that it's universally accepted that too many home runs are a bad thing. Especially not in Yankeeland, where they can pretend that they have nine Babe Ruths.
  7. Well, they don't want to lose Reyes for two weeks if he'll only be injured for one. I understand the desire, but too often it turns out to be two weeks anyway. The move I'd make right now is to demote Martinez and promote someone who can field the shortstop position. I don't know if there's really reason to think that Reyes will or won't be able to play by Monday or Tuesday, so I can't say whether they're making the wrong move by not putting him on the DL. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

  9. Jerry's really coming across this season as a guy who's not too thrilled with the team that he has. I didn't get that feeling last year. Maybe because he was in audition mode then?
  10. More likely it will be somebody like Mike Clam, I think.
  11. Yeah, I thought of LaRussa too. As the ugly downside of a guy who, at first glance, might appear to fit my description of the ideal manager.
  12. This push-button managing gets frustrating to watch. I yearn for a manager with above-average intelligence. I think the Mets have only had two guys who fit that description: Davey Johnson and Bobby Valentine. If I was hiring a manager I'd look for a smart guy who dared to be unorthodox.
  13. The Mets haven't hit a single home run on this trip. That's seven consecutive games without homering. The last Mets home runs were from Tatis and Sheffield on May 13, back in Queens.
  14. My daughter was asking me about triple plays the other day. She wanted to know if such a thing was possible. (I remember wondering the same thing about inside-the-park homers when I was her age.) I told her that they were very rare. In 39 years of watching baseball, I've seen exactly one, not counting highlight replays, of course. All I remember of it was that it involved Wally Backman. I believe it was against the Pirates in 1987. I'm not even sure if the Mets were in the field for the play or on the bases.
  15. I thought I'd bump this. After a 3-0 start, I thought my 3-7 prediction was overly pessimistic. But now it's at 3-4... If they take one of three in Boston the trip won't be a total loss. They'll hopefully come home within a couple of games of first, and then they can take it from there. This still doesn't feel at all like a championship team, (although cleonjones21 might say they've already won) but if they hang close and get a few breaks, good things might happen.
  16. I'm pleased that both of my kids are Mets fans. Not fervent enough to actually sit and watch on television, or even to follow on a day-to-day basis, but they proudly wear their Mets gear and get excited about attending the games. My daughter, about to turn 8, seems to have more fan potential than my 12-year-old son. I'm just glad they're not Phillies fans, which could very well have been the case, since we're in the heart of enemy territory.

  21. I don't see the point of worrying too much about "taint." (I was really surprised about how so many Mets fans couldn't forgive Tom Glavine for having once been a Brave. I could see not liking a guy who's proven to be a jerk or a thug. I'm glad Roger Clemens never became a Met, and I hope that Michael Vick never does. (That would be pretty darn unlikely, anyway.) But to not want a guy just because he was once a Yankee or a Brave or a Phillie just doesn't make sense to me.
  22. ]Voting for Monday night's loss to the Dodgers in LA will close some time on Thursday. We currently have a dead heat for first place in the Schaefer Player of the Year competition. Yesterday it was Cookie Lavagetto, and he's leading so far today as well. Were we aware of John Goodman's Mets background? Okay, but in May, he's fifth in at bats. Hmmm. My paranoia is kicking in. I'm waiting to hear what Cookie Lavagetto has to say about it. When you have outfielders, you play them in the infield. Is your mailbox full? Ryan Church is actually fourth on the team in at bats. Only Beltran, Wright, and Reyes have more. Sometimes I think, "we need a hit here" but in that sense I'm more thinking of we, the fans, not we, the team.
