It's nice to see a manager resist the urge to stretch his starter to 5 innings so he can get credit for a win. The save stat is the primary example of a statistic influencing a game. The 5-inning win is in second place.

The Mets were looking to get their division clincher, and the Pirates made them wait. (Much like the Phillies did at the Vet 20 years earlier.)

Pelfrey slumps off the mound in the 4th, down 8-4. No Schaefer for Mr. Pelfrey today, I'm afraid.

I wonder if anyone's been offended by those two guys from "NY NY SPORTS SPORTS."
-
I know it's a road game, but with Beltran up, I'm thinking "Vanis takee!"
-
And Castillo, who also doesn't suck, hustles out an infield hit to bring home the third run.
-
Turned the TV on again (sooner than I had planned) and Alex Cora (who doesn't suck) drives in the second Mets run.
-
I just turned off the television. I'll check in again in a little while, hoping to see 9-4 Mets.
-
Gary Cohen called the Pirates' first two hitters "fleas." Keith countered that they're "gazelles."
-
Bad call by the first base ump results in Castillo being called out at first. Beltran follows with a double off the top of the wall, so the ump has cost the Mets a first-inning run. Carlos is on second, two outs, and Sheffield hitting.

SLIDE AND DIVE WITH CARE! That would make for a good ballpark chant. It kind of reminds me of "We want you safe, because we want you back."

Voting for Tuesday night's loss to the Pirates at PNC Park will close sometime on Friday. Schaefer POTG 6/2/09 - Pirates 3, Mets 1 Not many voters so far. If you're planning to cast a ballot, please try to do so today.

I agree. I approve of the demotion but not of the distinction. Hopefully more Mets starters will be completing the 7th inning.
-
Surprised that there's not a doubleheader today, since the Mets don't have a scheduled return to Pittsburgh. Neither team has to travel far after the game. The Mets are off to Washington and the Pirates are headed to Houston.

I abject!
-
Yes, but I think the Mets should sign Glavine just to aggravate everyone.
-
This is what I feared about Jose. He has shown that he can play full healthy seasons. But he hasn't shown at all that he can quickly recover from injuries. In fact, he seems to be proving the opposite. Let's hope Alex Cora is better than some here have claimed. (I think he is.)

Hey! It's Job Bluth!
-
That sounds more Mennonite than Quaker.
-
I somehow missed Cora's activation. (Was he available for last night's game?) Who went away to make room for him? Was it Valdez?
