  1. It's still possible, although probably not likely, that Carlos Delgado will be the guy to hold first base until Ike Davis is ready. In that case, Murphy will become Ty Wigginton (or Joe McEwing) all the sooner.
  2. This one is just a formality, I'm sure.
  3. I was at that game in Washington. Since I was there, I didn't have the benefit of a replay, but I seem to recall that incident being the fault of the lead runner, who either stopped or retreated when he shouldn't have.
  4. I'm not unhappy with Francoeur. He can be part of a championship outfield, as long as the Mets get somebody kickass to play left field next year.
  5. I think they'll be better too. Whether they're better enough is another story. I don't think many of us will be satisfied with an 82-win season. They need to get A LOT better. (And 82 wins would be a pretty big gain.)
  6. Everyone seems to have been assuming that the Mets would go cheap this winter because of Bernie Madoff and the economy. But it still remains to be seen if that's true or not. I don't know one way or the other; we'll soon find out though.
  7. I didn't say it was impossible to lose for eight or more years. I just think it's impossible to be in a hole so deep that it there would be no hope of emerging for eight years.
  8. I didn't read the article, and I don't plan to, but it's possible to criticize the Mets without relating them to the Yankees in any way. If the Mets tickets were overpriced, they were overpriced, even if the Yankees tickets were more overpriced. "Rotten to the core" is just stupid. It reminds me of a brief item that I read in the Philadelphia Inquirer a few weeks ago that said that one NL scout (unnamed, of course) says that the Mets are so messed up that it will take them eight years to contend again. This was intended as a little treat to the Phillies fans/Mets haters who read the Inquirer sports section, but it's nonsense. I can't imagine how a team can be so bad that it will take eight whole years to recover.
  9. I must have tuned out just before Keith's statement. (I watched the postgame until the first commercial break.) My sense is that Keith didn't want to just disappear without saying good-bye to the viewers, but he also didn't know if he is actually going to disappear. So he said, I hope I come back, but I might not, and if I don't, I wanted to say that it's been fun. I don't see anything wrong with it. It may not have been something a polished broadcaster would have done, but Keith isn't polished, and that's a large part of his charm.
  10. I'm not saying there shouldn't be discussion. I'm just wondering if it intimidates some people.
  11. Can't you say that about just about any team, good or bad, throughout baseball's history. The Mets played over their heads for a decent stretch in 1980. Does Torre deserve credit for that? It's hard to say.
  12. Wouldn't it also be overkill if the Angels won a second championship this decade?
  13. Me, I just want early exits from the Yankees and the Phillies. Beyond that, I don't care at all what happens.
  14. Well, it wasn't aimed at you. I just figured that a Shea background fits a 1976 card better than a Citi background. (The source photo I used for the card had a grey "studio" background, so I needed to replace it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. There are other "retro cards" that do have Citi Field backgrounds.)
  15. I voted Dodgers, but... ick. Torre or LaRussa? Manny or Pujols? I just hope the Rockies roll right over whoever wins this series.
  16. Which is your preference?
  17. Which team would you like to see win?
  18. For whom are you rooting?
  19. Voting for all three games of the season-ending series against Houston will close on Wedneday. (Or maybe Thursday. But if you have votes that you want to cast, try to get them in today or tomorrow.) The final totals for Schaefer Mets Player of the Year will be announced once the Astros games are closed. I don't expect that anyone will be thrilled with the results, but it is what it is.
