I agree with the first part, but not with the second part of that. If we're looking for a fiery ex-Met to manage the team, I'd prefer John Stearns to Wally Backman. Stearns wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd prefer someone who's, you know, sane, and I have my doubts that Wally fits that criteria.
  2. Yeah, Carter and Lora are looking a whole lot better than the Type A picks that Boston won't be getting. Of course, the "according to the New York Post" part of the article makes me not all that sure how official this is. Billy may yet do a Brett Favre thing.
  3. Who are you rooting for?
  4. Clendenon 1.5 Weis 0.6 Taylor 1 Cardwell 0.5
  5. Is Yadier actually a jerk, or do we just hate him because he hit a heart-breaking home run? I'm not aware of any previous loutish behavior on his part, but I haven't been paying a whole lot of attention to him either.
  6. Not much suspense as to how this one will turn out...

  9. I'm no medical examiner, but I think I could differentiate between death by lightning and death by mugging.
  10. Looks like Ellis Valentine was traded from the Expos to the Mets in 1981 while he was on the disabled list. I guess the rule that's currently in place wasn't in effect back then. Or there was some kind of a loophole.
  11. Cool, thanks! And posting in this thread what's already been shared is a good idea. And if I have any legibility problems with any of the scans, I can post them here as well.
  12. Hey Mets fans! I can use some help for something I'm doing with the UMDB. I have a bunch of Mets Media Guides from over the years, but there are many that I'm missing. If anyone has any of the following guides, and would be willing to scan and e-mail me 1 to 3 pages from whatever guides they have, I'd appreciate it. I'm slowly building up a list of all disabled list transactions in Mets history. (I wonder what inspired that?) Visit Jose Reyes' page, or Cliff Floyd's, or Craig Swan's, if you want to see some of the data that's already been gathered.) Anyway, here are the Guides that I'm missing: 1963 through 1978. 1980 1982 1984 1985 1986 1988 1989 1990 1991 1997 2001 2002 2006 2007 What I need are the "Chronology" or "Transactions" sections. (I know that they've appeared in the Guides back to as early as 1979; I'm not sure if they were in the earlier Guides, but I imagine they were.) If you have access to a Guide and a scanner, and you're willing to help, I'd appreciate it, and so would legions of Mets fans from around the universe. Just send the scans to the address that's on this page: www.leaptoad.com/mets/contact.html My mother thanks you. My father thanks you. My sister thanks you. And I thank you.
  13. So if Santana had made just two more starts, (and received his average of 3.38 points in each of those two starts) he would have ended up with more points than David Wright, even while missing the entire month of September.
  14. Yeah, the origin of this thread is bizarre. MFS62 claims that he was right in pointing out that there's no ban on October trades, but nobody ever said there was such a ban, and he never said that there wasn't a ban. I simply said not to expect anything significant to happen until after the World Series, and then you (talking to Kong76 here) said pretty much the same thing, only you gave Thanksgiving as the date. This, somehow, got MFS62 to get huffy and post an "I told you so" when he actually didn't. As I said, bizarre.
  15. I know that I'd like to see it happen. A starting pitcher and a left-fielder. That's my offseason wish list.
  16. I noticed that Namor's quiz sometimes accepted more than one answer. For example, for Kitty Pryde I typed "Ariel" and it accepted that, but filled in the answer "Shadowcat." For Henry Pym, I entered "Yellowjacket" (and I assume that "Giant Man" or "Goliath" would also have worked) but the answer that displayed was "Wasp." I'm not at all up to date on recent happenings in the Marvel Universe, but I only knew of Janet Van Dyne as the Wasp. The Carl Lucas thing seemed wrong, but again, maybe there's some recent information I'm unaware of. I would have thought that his real name was Luke Cage and his hero name was "Power Man" or "Hero For Hire". (Both are pretty lame, by the way. If you have a cool name like "Luke Cage" why would you want to change it?)
  17. I agree with the first three selections. For me, though, 1971 would also win in the "warm fuzzy" category. My three favorite baseball card designs are, easily, 1971, 1972, and 1973. Those are the years when I cared the most about baseball cards, and a still have an abiding affection for those cards. Here are three cards I prepared this year for guys who almost won a POTM award, but were surpassed in the final days of the month:
  18. For THAT, you'll have to cull the individual threads. I just keep track of the totals.
  19. I doubt that player input was involved in those feminine-looking Rockies jerseys with the flared shoulders. If the Mets ever adopt something like that, I'm moving to Guam.
  20. That page has been there for years now. I guess it's been a while since I've "publicized" it. I'll be interested in seeing the results of your Friday time-wasting.
  21. Me, I'd prefer them to go back to the look of the early 1970's, but that's probably just my nostalgia kicking in. If there's less black and more blue, orange, and white I'll be happy. If they introduce some new kind of ugly then I'll be less happy.
