  1. Legal for me, I should have said. It was December 31, 1980, and I was 17.
  2. Saying you would drink beer in high school isn't "promoting underage drinking" no more than saying that you're divorced is "promoting divorce." Stating a fact about your life isn't necessarily an endorsement of the circumstances behind that fact. I drank when I was underage. In fact, the last time I was intoxicated was before it was legal. I'm not proud that I got drunk as a teenager, nor am I ashamed of it. Long story short, "knightreader" is an idiot.
  3. That mid-2010 for Ike is interesting. I can't help but read that as, at least partially, an expectation that Daniel Murphy isn't going to be all that.
  4. As many of you know, no beat reporter is closer to Carlos Beltran than I am... ARRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! Can a reporter write anything much douchier than that?
  5. In the early days, when they still looked alike, it was shirts like that that help us distinguish Zack from Cody. And yes, I hate that I know that.
  6. I imagine that they want their eggs in multiple baskets.
  7. I know that strike-throwing is a good thing, in baseball as well as in bowling, but there could be a danger in over-emphasizing this. If it becomes all about strikes, the result could be a big increase in hittable pitches over the plate.
  8. Now I'm pissed that Mackey Sasser wasn't there at the hospital when either of my two kids were born. I couldn't even get Ike Hampton to show up! Sheesh.
  9. I suspect that Gary Carter is trying to talk his way onto that list.
  10. People are laughing at Mets fans because the Indians reportedly signed Russ Branyan? How odd.
  11. The Japan Times is a cool paper, by the way. It's a great source of news from home for the many English speakers who find themselves living in Japan, but it also serves, through its letters page and columns and some of its features, as a kind of support group for all the gaijin who find themselves living in such an alien culture. At least, that's the impression I got during the two weeks I spent reading it back in 2006.
  12. metirish wrote: Can't find the quote but I read the other day that Jacobs is going there to win the first base job. And that's exactly the attitude I'd want him to have.
  13. I'd really prefer to see the number 50 reserved for Hawaiians.
  14. The Local Hoodlums are my favorite squadron.
  15. When you're finished doing them, maybe you could then post the letters.
  16. That's just for major leaguers. They still have about $40 million that they can spend for Buffalo.
  17. But if Thole hits .420 in spring training games, that consensus about him going to Buffalo will quickly evaporate.
  18. Harrow is a suburban town in the Greater London area.
  19. Former MLB pitcher Jim Bibby dead at 65 Chris Morris Lynchburg News & Advance Published: February 17, 2010 Jim Bibby, a longtime Madison Heights resident and former Major League Baseball player, died Tuesday night at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was 65. Bibby died around 9 p.m., said Jimmy Wright, a close family friend. Wright said Bibbys wife, Jacqueline, asked that the familys privacy be respected and that a statement would be released at a later date. In addition to his wife, Bibby is survived by two daughters, Tamara Bibby and Tanya McClain. Born in Franklinton, N.C., on Oct. 29, 1944, Bibbys Major League career began in 1972 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Between then and when he retired in 1984, he played for the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a member of the Pirates team that won the 1979 World Series and, when he was with Texas, he pitched a no-hitter against Oakland in 1973. After leaving the pros, Bibby served as pitching coach with the Lynchburg Mets, Red Sox and Hillcats for 15 years. After a year with the Pirates Nashville affiliate in 2000, Bibbys contract wasnt renewed and he retired. In 2002, the Hillcats retired his number during a ceremony at City Stadium. The first 1,000 who attended that game received a Jim Bibby bobblehead doll, which produced a chuckle from the honoree. "Anytime you get a two-for-one deal, it sounds pretty good, dont it?" he was quoted in The News & Advance article of the event. "Not many minor-league coaches get their jerseys retired. Its an honor for me, and Im really appreciative of it." Bibbys funeral arrangements were incomplete as of Tuesday night.
  20. Isn't Great Analogy that doctor show on ABC, with McDreamy?
  21. I voted for Nieve but I'm hoping it's Niese.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Ike Davis can keep his 78 for now, but ultimately I'd like to get him in a number below 20. Now that I know that Ike Davis looks like Steve Garvey, I think he'd look good in a number 6. (Unless Wally Backman claims it first...)
