  1. Phillies fans are probably wondering why Obama mentioned Sotomayor as a rival fan instead of Alito.
  2. Plus, his one World Series appearance came as a Met.
  3. I wouldn't object to a walkoff homer by a left fielder. Or a shortstop.
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: I always find it odd when the 2nd or 3rd oldest son is the one who gets his father's name. Usually that happens right off the bat or not at all. Sometimes there are other family members they want to honor first. Maybe the first two sons get named after the grandparents. There's an Italian naming tradition where the first two sons, and the first two daughters, get named after the paternal, then the maternal, grandparents. It's not until the third son or the third daughter that the parents can actually choose the name. This tradition was in play for my father's side of the family right up until the generation in which he was born.

  10. My daughter sometimes gives me updates on the fan dynamics at her elementary school. She learned just the other day that the big Yankee fan in her class had never heard of Derek Jeter. I'm a married pet owner with children, which puts me in the Mets demographic. (Of course, I was a Met fan back when I was childless and single, but that was in a different era.) I'm less Met-like in that I drink alcohol very rarely, and I don't own a gun.
  11. Voting for Wednesday afternoon's loss to the Reds in Cincinnati will close some time over the weekend, perhaps as early as Saturday morning. Schaefer POTG 5/5/10 - Reds 5, Mets 4
  12. If the Mets can continue to win 9 out of every 10 at home, and 1 out of every 3 on the road, they'll end up with about 99 wins.
  13. I remember seeing photos of Pope John Paul II's body during his funeral. I think they were carrying him around somehow attached to a board. I'd probably prefer not to be photographed after I'm dead, but I'm not sure why. We live in a culture that often puts people on display temporarily after they die. Maybe it's the permanence of a photo that's a little off-putting?
  14. I was always intrigued by Andy Etchebarren.
  15. Somehow these POTM threads always end up being about baseball cards!
  16. She sat on a forbidden couch???? And ADMITTED IT ON THE RADIO???? Some people have no shame!
  17. Edgy DC wrote: Couldn't agree more, except by "cared most," I would mean "cared." Me too, pretty much. I didn't stop caring on January 1, 1980, but by then my enthusiasm was a lot lessened, and it continued to decline for years after.
  18. Just wanna keep this on the current page so nobody misses it... The games played in Cincinnati against the Reds on Monday and Tuesday nights will both close on Friday, some time after noon. Schaefer POTG 5/3/10 - Reds 3, Mets 2 (11 Innings) Schaefer POTG 5/4/10 - Mets 5, Reds 4

  20. Thanks! That's the first time I've ventured into 1978. I don't know if I'll go beyond that. Maybe to 1979, but no more. I like the idea of confining this stuff to the 1970's, the decade where I cared most about baseball cards.
  21. It was part of his cover. Had he gone walking around in a Yankees cap, everyone would have known he was a terrorist.
  22. Well, if he ever asks you for a charitable donation, you only need to feel obligated to give him $2.
