Remember when you were Sandy Alderson? Well, dammit, you're still Sandy F. Alderson. And you're frankly a little underwhelmed at the ex-manager managerial candidates presented to you by your assistant GM and your special assistant to the GM. And then it occurs to you ... you have another special assistant to the GM — he's been on the job a couple of days now — and so you give him a call.

"TERRY!" you say, "I'm looking for an experienced manager. No, another experienced manager. This may be a total dick move, but I figure you know a lot of guys. On the one hand, you were a manager just last week. On the other hand — CALM DOWN, Terry — you've been around the race track a few times."

You let Terry vent for a bit about fundamentals and eggs in your beer and guys who run tight ships, and it's frankly still less annoying than listening to Willie Randolph talk about winning. At the end, you're all, "So, you'll have that list of 17 guys on my desk by nine, right?"

And damned if he doesn't have it there by seven. Because Terry is a lot of things. But above all, he's a pretty standup guy.

Which four of these 17 managers would you call in for the interview? Or at least the pre-interview interview?

Is this the "Really Old Guys" group?

Posted

Yeah, it just shook out that way, but howzabaout that? I sorted them into groups based on their last year managing. So each group should have some recent guys near the front of the list, but that may mean guys pretty much as old as the guys that haven't seen a dugout in decades.

Group D will have a couple of guys who haven't yet seen a social security check.

I hope Group D is more encouraging.

We're going old, huh? Let's go CRETACEOUS, motherfathers.

Leyland, McKeon, Lefvebre, and Gardner... the last if only because I'm kind of morbidly, evilly curious about whether this team could actually kill a guy with its play.

Tom Lawless is the bomb. First of all, his name is Tom Lawless. Second of all, if I'm remembering correctly, the Cardinals carried him virtually the whole season in 1987, but he didn't record a single hit until September. SEPTEMBER! His final batting average on the season was .080. Two-for-25.

But then, following a post-season injury to Terry Pendleton, the guy hits a homer in the World Series for Whitey Herzog.

Tom Lawless. That's a guy who'll reward your faith.

Hey, are we going to see Pete Rose in this game? He's not dead, but ineligible for other reasons.

I never promised you a Rose pardon.

So basically we're putting every living manager from the last 10 to 30 years into a pile and picking one out?

Every living manager from forever. And picking four out from each group.

Leyland, but only if he doesn't smoke in the dugout. Or smoke period for that matter.

This group needs more votes. Got a three-way tie for fourth among Lawless, Martinez, and Gardner, with two votes each.

I can't believe I'm the only one who voted for Essian. That mustache was a *star.*
