That is a very good example of a bad idea.
What has he done to show you that he can make the quick decisions necessary to be a manager?
He has taken months to decide whether he can't play any more, and he still hasn't done it. I can't imagine how long it will take him to decide when to remove a starter who doesn't have it that night. (OK, not a fair comparison of situations, but you get the message.) IMO, he would have to demonstrate his ability to manage on some level before he is given a major league job.

Take that sentence out and my message still stands. He hasn't demonstrated his qualifications to be the next manager of the Mets. I don't think managing a major league team is a learn-on-the-job position.

honestly I'll take anyone willing to learn, whether it's on the job or not, over someone who thinks we should do things like they were in 1960. (i.e. stop with all the bunting and IBB and stop giving free bases and outs)

10th in baseball with 29 Bunt Attempts, which I think might not be measuring successful sacrifices? not sure. We're near the bottom in sacrifice bunts, but I don't know if that's because we suck at it or because our pitchers are getting bombed and lifted before they get to try to bunt or Rene Rivera is simply making out and leaving them with no one to bunt.

Yup, that's how I think it'll play out, too. I think the decision's already been made and Terry knows. Hell, he's 68. Who'd want to put up with all the shit he gets for another year?

I remember another Mets third baseman who went directly to managing -- even a short stint as player-manager -- and today he's in the Hall of Fame!

(Of course, some people questioned the ability needed to manage a team of All-Stars with management hell-bent on winning with an unlimited budget.)

Then there's the other former Mets third baseman who went straight to managing and was not quite as successful. Bobby Valentine's comments about that at the Queens Baseball event were funny.)

I can't do Bobby V justice, and I only heard the audio. But it was along the lines of, "Of all the guys on that team I thought could be managers someday, Robin? Seriously?"

He wasn't saying he didn't have the ability, but talked about his role in the fake mustache incident and a seeming fondness for breaking the rules. Find the podcast of Bobby speaking that day. It's worth it.

The guy has been around baseball and baseball people all his life.

Jon Heyman reporting that all indications are that Terry is a goner at the end of the season.

He's 980-996 on his career. Getting back to .500 doesn't seem reachable, but perhaps getting to 1,000 wins is.

I gotta give Terry a pass for this season. What a lousy hand he has been dealt in 2017. But, as you know, I usually support whoever is managing until they are gone.

The recent listless play can be hung on Collins shoulders, but I'd still give him a pass, although I would have him on a very short leash in 2018.

I hate that he's gotta twist in the wind like this. Mets and he should get out in front and make it seem like it's his decision to spend more time with the grandkids and therefore is accepting a senior advisor role and a seat on the board of directors.

It's possible they've talked to him. Maybe he's not twisting. Maybe they're waiting to see if he even wants to come back.

But yeah, if they're going to move on (and I think if they move on it should mean ALL the coaches too) to hopefully someone better, certainly don't make him twist.
