A rare tight game for Vegas tonight where they somehow weren't down by multiple runs after one. Three hits for Nimmo and two Rosario as Smith sat. A 7-2 win featuring Travis Taijeron's 19th homer, and 63rd in his Las Vegas career.

Things are stabilizing for the Las Vegas 51s, and by stabling, I mean that they aren't necessarily giving up crooked numbers in each of the first three innings of every game. But times are hard and they're hardest in Vegas, where winning six of their last 10 games still leaves the Aliens in fourth and last place, and 11 games out of third.

The problem, you may well conclude, is mostly starting pitching. Their pitching staff of late has included the likes of Ricky Knapp (6.10 ERA in 23 starts), Donovan Hand (7.86 ERA in 12 starts), Wilfredo [crossout]Gascan[/crossout] Boscan (5.59 ERA in 20 starts), Mitch Atkins (7.50 ERA in 8 starts) and Blake Beavan (7.45 ERA in three starts). When Tyler Pill is with the Mets, every night is a long night for manager Pedro Lopez.

But hey, occasionally, the dynamite desert offense keeps 'em in the game. You know, another thing attractive about Dominic Smith besides his lofty numbers, his girth, and his stoned-ass eyes, is his consistency, Dom hit .337 in April, .314 in May, .324 in June, and .385 in the heat of July. He's got 16 homers and 33 doubles and if they had gotten rid of one of their corner outfielders, he might have been called up before Amed Rosario. He probably deserved it.

Also agitating for a promotion is Kevin F. Plawecki, hammering to the tune of .330 / .382 / .517 // .899. That's offense from a backstop. When's it gonna translate to the bigs? I DUNNO! But he's been a tough out all year, and just getting tougher.

Travis Taijeron is having his usual sluggy year, sixth in the league with 22 homers, and really hitting well across the board, going .282 / .382 / .540 // .922. I don't really wanna hear nuthin' about him striking out too much (which he totally does, whiffing 123 times, only two behind league leader Patrick Wisdom of Memphis). The guy probably deserved a September look-see the last two years. He definitely deserves one now.

The best relievers have mostly been called up. What you see is what you get, and that probably feeds into the Mets being satisfied in getting minor league bullpen help, if little else, at the deadline. Next year has to be better, relief-wise.

When I saw that Smith wasn't in the lineup for Las Vegas last night, I started to go into my happy dance. I thought he was on his way to New York. Then he pinch hit later in the game. And I was sad.

Walker and Cabrera both cleared waivers. I'm guessing Walker gets moved in the next couple of days, which will make room for Smith.

I did a double take (Huh? He's younger than me???) when I saw Frank Viola listed as being born in 1969. Viola was born in 1960.

Moving Walker would be easier if he didn't return from the DL in the mother of all slumps.

With Smith out of the lineup, the 51s pulled off a four-run rally for a 9-7 win over the Reno Aces in an all-Nevada matchup.

The new 3-4-5 in the Las Vegas batting order is Plawecki-Taijeron-Boyd. Still a capable lineup if not quite as formidable. Still a matchstick pitching rotation.

Jamie Callahan threw shutout ball the last two innings to earn his first win in the Mets system.
