Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I was really hoping this would be an Odd Couple thread.I saw Hidden Figures a few weeks back, and I may be crazy, but I don't recall Viola Davis being in it. What did I miss?
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Viola Davis' nod is for FENCES, not HIDDEN FIGURES, although how she qualifies as a supporting actress is beyond me.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 sharpie wrote:Viola Davis' nod is for FENCES, not HIDDEN FIGURES ... That I got this wrong I believe makes me a racist; either that or the site I copied this off of made the mistake in which case they are and I'm in the clear. At least I didn't call it HIDDEN FENCES IN THE MOONLIGHT
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 If you were really a racist, you would have called it CABIN IN THE SKY.

I'm sure it's happened other times as well although that's the only one that comes to mind. Maybe they're trying their hardest for an OSCARSNOTWHITEATALL hashtag.* a movie which is about to be remade with Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine in the Burns, Art Carney, & Lee Strasberg roles
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 happy to see the love for ARRIVAL and HELL OR HIGH WATER.But Amy Adams got hosed (Meryl? AGAIN?), and they went out of their way to ignore DEADPOOL.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 As a big fan of La La Land, I'm delighted. It's also great the "Audition (The Dreamers that Dream)" is up for best song.I am disappointed the Amy Adams and Taraji P. Henson didn't get Best Actress nods.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Ooh, I love Vic's list each year. Movies I saw, in vague-ish order of preference:ZOOTOPIAROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORYGHOSTBUSTERSFANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEMTHE SECRET LIFE OF PETSMOANACAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WARSING
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I count 16 movies I've seen this year. Top 10 would be (not necessarily in this order)"MOONLIGHTELLEFENCESTONI ERDMANNMANCHESTER BY THE SEALA LA LANDTHE LOBSTERARRIVALHELL OR HIGH WATERHAIL, CAESAR!Other than FANTASTIC BEASTS, I generally liked the rest of them as well:EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!BORN TO BE BLUEMAGGIE'S PLANLOVE & FRIENDSHIPLOVINGFANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I think that these are the only ones I saw. (And I saw 10 Cloverfield Lane on TV, not in a theater, by the way.)10 CLOVERFIELD LANEBATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICECAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WARDEADPOOLDOCTOR STRANGEHAIL, CAESAR!SUICIDE SQUADX-MEN: APOCALYPSEI enjoyed the Marvel movies more than those from DC, except for Deadpool, which was a chore to sit through.

And now, after reconsidering it, i'm still not going to see it. I have an image in my mind of wild horses trying, unsuccessfully, to drag me into a theater to see it, but i triumph! Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Wow, I saw a whopping 20 movies released in 2016 (quite high for me) even though many of them were seen just recently via cable and/or DVDIn rough order of goodness, although that bottom section are essentially just interchangeable versions of 'Meh' that could go in pretty much any order HELL OR HIGH WATER - loved it the first time (theater) and even more the second (DVD)LA LA LAND - I'm not quite as over the moon as some, but very good—————————CAPTAIN FANTASTIC - odd story well told, and the rare feat of having multiple child actors that I didn't want to strangle A MAN CALLED OVE - well-done version of the popular book which, by coincidence, I finished on the day this became available on disc. yes, it's in SwedishSING STREET - Irish music movie where I almost needed the subtitles as much as the Swedish film above——————————-HAIL, CAESAR! - those goofy Coen boys get some good performances out of Clooney, Brolin, Swinton (x2)MANCHESTER BY THE SEA - well done but geez is it depressingSULLY - just watched it last night and found it better than I expected. (spoiler alert: Tom Hanks plays the hero)THE NICE GUYS - silly fun with R. Crowe and R. GoslingWHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT - silly fun with Tina F. - albeit during a war and shitI SAW THE LIGHT - as bio-pics go it wasn't badMIDNIGHT SPECIAL - Well done but, like this guy's other movie w/Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) I don't get where he's going with themA BIGGER SPLASH - Ralph Fiennes plays a music industry asshole, then things happen around him——————————-——————————-MONEY MONSTER - George Clooney solves the financial crisis in a matter of hours ... and with a gun pointed at his head no lessDEEPWATER HORIZON - the better of the two Peter/Wahl Berg flicks (see also: Day, Patriots)THE BOSS - Melissa McCarthy being Melissa McCarthyPATRIOTS DAY - not sure if it wanted to be a procedural, a documentary, a tearjerker, a fundraiser, a flag-waver - so wound up as a confused slice of eachRACE - a cookie-cutter-like bio like that Jackie Robinson one from a year or two ago, only not even that good13 HOURS - I guess it gives a reasonable account of when things went sideways in Benghazi, but mostly just a lot of shit blows upEDDIE THE EAGLE - pretty much a waste
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I had hoped that Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson" might get something. Amazon bought the movie. Released 12/28
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2017 Author Posted January 27, 2017 btw, Lin-Manual Miranda is up for the song "How Far I'll Go" from MOANA, which is significant in that, if he wins, it'll make him part of the exclusive 'EGOT' club designating those who have won an EMMY, a GRAMMY (2 in his case), an OSCAR, and a TONY (3). He also has a Pulitzer (PEGOT?). But don't feel too bad, it will have taken him nearly nine years to accomplish all that so he's practically a slacker.

Guest themetfairy Guests Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 BTW, if you are wondering what Lin-Manuel's Emmy award is for, check this out. It's legen- wait for it - dary![youtube:f5aerikl]R0cK6lkfgHI[/youtube:f5aerikl]
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Sorry Casey, it aint Manchester's night!Other than that I consider Viola Davis a lock. Denzel if for no other reason Cesey A looks like a serial assgraber.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 Yeah, C. Affleck's past transgressions for alleged harassment issues (settled two cases out of court) may just be enough to lose the award that seemed like it's been his for about four months now.No real clear-cut favorite if it's not him though. And, yes, Viola is a lock as putting her in the Supporting Actress category seemed to be designed to do just a year after #OscarSoWhiteSupporting Actor goes to Mehershala AliPicture/Director - LaLaLand walks away with bothScreenplays:Adapted is probably the big nod that ARRIVAL getsOriginal does the same for HELL OR HIGH WATEROh yeah, and Emma Stone wins big.I rarely see even half of the movies/actors nominated, but I'm never wrong about these things except when I am.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2017 Author Posted February 27, 2017 This just in: the Cleveland Indians were the actual winners of the 2016 World Series.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Went to bed right after Fay Dunaway read the wrong movie so I missed the final drama. Good result, though.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Obligatory movie analogy- If there had been a mix-up like that with the envelopes at Don Corleone's daughter's wedding, the person who did it would be wearing cement shoes at the bottom of the river by now.Later
Guest sharpie Guests Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Yeah, how does stuff like that even happen. And who discovered it? The accountants?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2017 Author Posted February 27, 2017 sharpie wrote:Went to bed right after Fay Dunaway read the wrong movie so I missed the final drama.Same here.how does stuff like that even happen. And who discovered it? The accountants?Duplicate envelopes is apparently the answer -- Dunaway & Beatty were handed a copy of the Emma Stone - Best Actress card and saw 'LA LA LAND' mentioned. But if the idea is to keep everyone in the dark about the winner -- I guess so as to maintain 'The Big Reveal' even among the presenters -- it's obvious that someone had to know and it seems oddthat they'd keep a couple of the accountants backstage there just in case something that couldn't possibly happen actually happens. And if someone is going to know anyway then you might as well clue the presenters in before they go out there just to avoid something like this. They are actors after all and so you figure they can fake surprise as well as anyone.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Hollywood, those fine arbiters of taste and integrity.Reveal the winner with an executive order maybe,

Otherwise couldn't they have just said nothing and let the 'wrong' film win and move on?
