Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Chi. Cubs at ClevelandWhen: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, October 25, 2016Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OhioSportsDirect Inc.One long-suffering fan base is guaranteed to be smiling by the end of the World Series while the other will go back to hanging its collective head and listing off curses. The Chicago Cubs try to start snapping a 108-year drought while extending the Indians' streak of World Series futility to 69 years when they visit Cleveland for Game 1 on Tuesday. The Cubs already snapped one long drought just by reaching the World Series for the first time since 1945 when Kyle Hendricks and Aroldis Chapman finished off the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday. "Go out there and play the game freely, play the kind of game we're accustomed to playing, which would be we would want to pitch well, catch the ball on defense and work good at-bats," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters of his team's approach. "So when you get to this particular moment, to try to avoid being outcome based, we try to do that all the time, just go out there, continue to work the process." The Indians, like the Cubs, made a move at the deadline to bring in an ace reliever and plucked Andrew Miller from the Yankees. The left-hander and ALCS MVP is proving his worth in the playoffs with 21 strikeouts and five hits allowed in 11 2/3 scoreless innings over six games - in each of which he recorded at least four outs.TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, FOXPITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (2-0, 0.86 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (2-1, 0.98)Chicago started Lester in each of its last two playoff series and was rewarded with dominant performances each time. The two-time World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox was the co-MVP of the NLCS along with second baseman Javier Baez after surrendering two runs in 13 innings in the series against the Dodgers. Lester, who got the nod over Jake Arrieta, owns a 2.50 ERA in 19 career postseason games (17 starts) and is 4-0 with a 3.72 ERA in eight career starts at Progressive Field in Cleveland.Kluber allowed nine hits over 13 1/3 scoreless innings in his first two postseason starts but struggled to close out the ALCS in Game 4 at Toronto, when he was reached for two runs in five frames and absorbed the loss. The former Cy Young Award winner's 20 postseason strikeouts is one behind Miller for the most among pitchers still left in the postseason, though his seven walks are No. 1. Kluber did not walk a batter in his lone previous start against the Cubs and struck out 11 while allowing one run in 7 2/3 innings on Aug. 24, 2015.WALK-OFFS:1. Indians manager Terry Francona and Cubs president Theo Epstein combined to snap a different World Series drought when they were together with the 2004 Boston Red Sox.2. Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber has not played since undergoing surgery on his left knee in April but could serve as DH in the World Series.3. Cleveland RHP Danny Salazar (forearm) threw three innings in a simulated game Sunday and was added to the World Series roster.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2016 Author Posted October 25, 2016 Cubs activate LF/C/DH Kyle Schwarber and he will be the starting DH in tonight's game.Schwarber had just five trips to the plate this season (0/4 plus a walk) before tearing the ACL & LCL in his knee in an outfield collision in the 2nd inning of Game #3 of the season.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Author Posted October 26, 2016 So, according to the commercial from an inning ago, one baby boomer in 30 is infected by 'Hepatitis C'Do you suppose that's mostly a remnant of long-ago drug use or from a more recent infatuation with tattoos?

Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Indians fans are living the high life. The plaza behind the ballpark smells mainly like cannabis.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I know how cliche it is to complain about baseball announcers but Joe Buck is terrible. He's just so insincere
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Author Posted October 26, 2016 Yeah, but once you learn to fake sincerity it's all gravy.I dunno, Buck rarely bothers me, but I seem to have a higher tolerance for announcers for network announcers than most fans. There are always a handful that can really get under my skin, but Buck isn't one of them.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Author Posted October 26, 2016 So maybe that 3 pitchers to get 3 outs strategy just to get through the 7th isn't working out so well tonight, eh Maddon?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I think the reason fans hate him is that he's trying way too hard to appear as a knowledgeable guy on one hand but on the other, dumbing it down for a nonexistent "never watches baseball until the postseason" fan and it all plays out in insincerity-- every player is the BEST, every play has massive importance, etc etc. Just call the game ypu fake hipster wannabe silver spoon sucker.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Smoltz though I really like. From the little I have see on the pre and post game ARod tries to give analysis , Rose just clowns around.I didn't know much about the Indians, but they are fun to watch, didn't catch the last two innings of this.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Didn't turn out to affect the outcome, but let's discuss the short fly ball Davis caught with the bases loaded in the 7th. 3-0 game and we are nearing Foxwoods Resorts turning point of the game territory. Nobody out, Zobrist on third.Davis grabs it and immediately goes home to prevent Zobrist from tagging. However, Schwarber was way off second and Davis had about as easy a DP for an outfielder. Maybe he didn't see him or maybe he was just so focused on preventing the run from scoring that he automatically came up throwing home. What's the right play there? You have to take the second out by doubling off Schwarber I think, no matter what Zobrist ends up doing. Worst case there Cleveland should be up 3-1 with 2 outs and a runner on first.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Author Posted October 26, 2016 Yeah, you def throw to 2nd there if you see it although you can't really blame Davis in CF for immediately gunning it home. If there's any blame to place it should probably go to Lindor at SS who didn't seem to realize until the very last second that Schwarber was off in never-never-land (2B Kipnis was out for the short fly and so had his back to the play while Lindor stayed in). At the very last second Lindor seems to be throwing his hands up, presumably to signal 'throw it here', but by that point Davis has practically released the ball and couldn't possibly have seen him. Not sure where Napoli was as you figure he'd be the cut-off man on that play hanging out somewhere around the mound which also could have nailed Schwarber on the old 8-3-6 play but he either wasn't there (maybe thinking that the fly was so shallow there was no need) or he also didn't see Schwarber wandering and so let the throw go through.
