'Shoulder discomfort' is the given reason.
Seth Lugo to go instead, it'll be his first ML start.

Apparently Matz felt it during his regular throwing session on Wednesday and, when things were no better Thursday, he was shutdown at least for this turn.

Pitcher trying to pitch with an injury hurts something else?

What a shock.

Shut him down. Noah too. Limit deGroms innings.

Let's see what the kids can do and start planning for next year.

Maybe Harvey had a bigger leadership role than we thought

Then you risk hitting a wall in 2017 when they push significantly past what they did this year.

It's not time for mailing it in yet, but even if it were I'd want them at least to go to the wire. Pull them earlier or go to a 6 man in September, but let's pitch full seasons here.

What "kids"? The 'kids' are already here.
Anything beyond them means a rotation anchored by Logan Verrett and then trails off from there.

Besides, I'm not keen on giving up a season 4/5 games out of a playoff spot with 1/4 of the season to go ... but maybe that's just me.
It's a sore shoulder, or more specifically "discomfort" when he throws his curveball. Until it proves to be something further then let's not run around pressing every panic button we can find.

I know I'm waffling with Kclintonesque proportions here but I ain't giving up quite
yet. There's little to hang our hats on but there are still 40ish games to go and any
given week of winning combined with others losing and kaboom they're right back
in the WC chase.

Chekc bakc tomorrow for my new take on 2016. Let's go Lugo!

I know, I read your mbtn.net entry. Say hi to the Arch for us!

Roobs says the Mets plan on DL-ing Matz, describing it as shoulder tightness and saying no structural damage.

On the plus side, we spent a good chunk of the second half last year waiting for Matz to recover from cloudy injuries.

MLB.com is crediting Jon Hey Man (why don't you leave me alone) for the news although adds that the club hasn't confirmed.

Meanwhile, ya gotta love the hoops that Rubin is forced to jump through here: "a mild shoulder strain and rotator cuff inflammation during an examination with team doctors in Manhattan on Monday, as first reported by FanRag Sports and confirmed by ESPN".

The 'confirmed by ESPN' is a recent policy of the Four-Letter Network after years of being accused of claiming credit for everything they aired or published whether they had the news first or ninth.
Now 'FanRag Sports' could be run out of some guy's basement or by Edward R. Murrow IV for all I know, but I do get a kick out of the tortured legalese they go through in order to make it sound like they get half-credit by sticking Bristol's stamp of approval on everything that they think wouldn't exist had they just said "as reported by _______".

Gsellman will wear 65.

Also, other Rivera will replace Big Daddy Walker during Pat Leave.

Wow. Niese too. this is a very injured team! could you imagine if they thought they were set and didn't bring Colon back after last year's embarrassment of pitching riches?

Way to be realistic. Matz needs surgery.

...says which doctor?

1) well the "blow three to the birds" is out the window already so the 'be realistic' part is too

2) Matz allowed 2 runs over 13 innings in his last two starts, so while he may eventually need surgery he don't need it now.

Way to be wrong, Babe!

When did "realistic" become a synonym for "miserable"? Curses on you, Arthur Miller.

And now Matz will NOT come off the DL to make the start on Thursday as previously planned.

The NYDN (Peter Botte) reports that Matz was ... shut down an outfield tossing session on Monday after one throw because he “felt a sensation” and irritation in his shoulder, according to Collins.
“I am, yes,” Collins replied when asked if he was worried about losing Matz for a substantial timeframe. “His shoulder’s not ready to go, so he won’t be pitching (Thursday).
“He needs more rest. He needs to continue with some more therapy. We aren’t going to have him throw probably for a couple of more days. We’re hoping we can throw him over the weekend and see if he can be ready next week.”

Current plans have deGrom moved up from Friday to Thursday to finish out the Miami series with Gsvllman slated to open against the Nats
And the hits just keep on coming.

Just shut him down before his arm falls off.

Posted

No real reason to risk blowing his arm out this season.

The guy has had a history of arm trouble. Maybe we have seen Matz as good as he gets.

Lets see hin in April.

maybe not an indictment of his character but Matz was signed in 2009 and we still haven't gotten an injury free season from him.

This is a little disturbing. Last year he was the toast of the town.

What's your real views on the postseason, NY area dwellers? Am I wrong to suppose it can still all happen?

Last year he was the toast for 5 or 6 appearances before disappearing with an injury, then having more toast.
