Erstwhile lefty specialist Scott Rice has been signed away by Arizona.

He, uh, wore 56. Didn't succeed a whole lot more than Andrés Torres in it, but he had his moments.

Even before he got hurt, he seemed to throw profoundly slow. Even by lefty junk specialist standards.

He was successful at times. A good piece of the bullpen when healthy.

Came in with a good story -- journeyman minor leaguer has dream come true finally -- which sort of masked the fact the Mets weren't in the business of making dreams come true but in the business of assembling the most affordable bullpen they possibly could. That said, Rice was better than Greg Burke and Brandon Lyon and prolly a few other of them too. He did the job.

Bland, but palatable. Won't be missed in the 2016 recipe.

Enjoyed being in the portion of the crowd that stayed to the end of Opening Day 2013 and knew enough to applaud heartily for Scott Rice's big league debut. Not only was the game out of hand (in a good way) but it was getting very brisk, so it wasn't a full house by then. What stays with me was the way the wind whipped at Scott's pants. They billowed while he stood on the mound. It wasn't an ideal situation for your first game in the majors, yet it will always be ideal in his memory of it.

That's about as Splitsville as you can get.

Somewhere there's a Met scout (or a then-Met scout) who recommended him. Good for him. I remember him drawing so little attention during the spring in 2013 that Frayed Knot posted the opening day roster and shrugged, writing something like, "I'm going to have do some reading up on this Scott Rice character." After six weeks or whatever, none of us had a clue.

I remember he got hurt down the stretch in 2013, and Terry had in his bullpen at one time three generations of Mets LOOGys — Rice, Byrdak, and Feliciano — all of them nursing tender wings and getting no more than one or maybe two batters or so per appearance. It's a tough job, kids.

He worked his ass off in the minors to make the majors.
When he got there, Terry tried to work his arm off. He led the team in appearances.
As others have said, nice story, did his job. Working guy.
