Memories of Anthony Recker

Anthony Recker has signed a minor league deal with Cleveland. Let the memories commence.

I remember how every so often he would hit a timely home run, often of the 3-rbi variety.

I remember how adorably he and his wife announced their pregnancy.

But mostly, I remember how my straight male friends here found him to be the sexiest thing alive.

Not all of us!

But so many of you!

Strongest guy on the team. Confident enough in his manliness (or, perhaps, weakest, if that's the way you want to look at it) to allow his girlfriend to talk him into some fruity glam engagement photos. Hey, maybe they were her idea! Anyway, between that and the birth announcement, they made Kelly Recker a Wifey Watch All Star.

As backup catchers go, he wasn't such a great guy to get bumped up to starting catcher in 2014, but there have been worse, it's just that about 80% of his value was in his power. Unfortunate for him that his worst year was the Mets championship year, so he didn't taste any post-season, but that's the breaks. His three seasons with the Mets were good/bad/bad-enough-to-cost-you-a-job.

Contributions to this season was finishing a bench emptying game at third, allowing the Mets to advance their winning streak and sink the Phils with an early-season sweep* and hitting both of his 2015 homers in the same game, which didn't stop the Cubs from sweeping the Mets, but helped out in the dignity category going forward. I wonder how many Mets have hit two homers in a game with that representing their entire season's output.

But speaking of dignity, his number one highlight of 2015 had to be the Mets last exhibition game. They tore through their spring schedule before heading off to TBA for two games against Texas before the season. You could hardly blame the Mets if they mailed it in, but in that last game, there they were, down 4-0 in the ninth with only four hits on the scoreboard. Eric Campbell opens the inning by flying to right against Andrew Faulkner, followed quickly by Brandon Allen grounding out to second. But Faulkner (no David Faulkner he) faulted, walking Johnny Monell, surrendering a single to John Mayberry, Jr., walking Matt Reynolds, and absorbing a game-tying grand slammy by Anthony Recker. Don't leave your seat until the last out, Texans.

What a great announcement to the world what kind of start to the season the Mets were set to have.

July 26, 2013, a Friday, the first game of a day/night DH at Washington. Jenry Mejia starts and pitches 7 shutout innings (7 K's), Murphy hits two HR's. To the point of this thread: I was sitting about 25 rows behind the Mets dugout. There were 4 people closer to the dugout wearing "Recker" shirts. They had to be specially made and with the Mets winning, I approached them and one says: "father, brother, sister, cousin." When Recker scores, after hitting an RBI double off the wall, all of them take pictures. His father walks up the aisle later, remembers me and stops to say hello.

I remember 1-for-4 with a home run or double, in a laugher, pretty much always on a Sunday. I remember always being a little surprised when he hit one out.

He always looked to me like the more clean-cut and civilized cousin of L'il Abner.
But by simply throwing a pair of beat-up overalls on him and having him grow his hair a bit longer and shaggier and your casting dilemma for your community theatre version of Al Capp's musical has solved itself.

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as him.

Hit a big home run in the first would-have-been Harvey Day start after his was announced Harvey was going in for TJS. Ralph did that game.

Saw him pitch, back when we couldn't beat Washington.

He gave up a homer to Ian Desmond. Just remember that when you cite Desmond's power numbers.

I thought that was the game that ended Brandon Lyon's career, but I'm checking now and he had two more appearances.

The one I'm thinking of was Wheeler's first season... was that 2013? We fell behind by 11 or so.
