I may have missed it, but was there any comment from Blevins on why his uni number changed from 13 to 39? 13 was a number he had been wearing since 2008 with the A's.

I suppose it might have to due with the bad luck last season...but I would think anyone wearing #13 that long would be above the superstition that surrounds the number.

Cabrera as a Venzuelan infielder is required to wear 13. Not really but he did before too. Long history with Concepcion and Vizquel and Alfonzo etc etc. Venezuelans also love No. 11.

He signed sooner than Blevins and Blevins made a point of saying Cabrera could have it. Kevin Kernan wrote a column in the Post last week not knowing any of that and got the facts wrong.

It's great that there have been many more recent and higher-profile Venezuelans (infielders in particular) since Concepcion, but he still holds his lofty place among them in the hearts of his countrymen. Venezuelan baseballers know their history!

Status update!

Adam Rubin is reporting that Ruben Tejada, originally scheduled to hit the free agent market after the 2017 season, has been apparently credited with one more day of service time, which moves up his free agency eligibility by a full year. Ruben's playing for a contract this year, man!

I missed this transaction a few weeks back — not a single media outlet that I can find carried a note about it — but catchers tend to get phone calls as February rolls around.

Rohlfing was part of about a half dozen minor league vets brought in late in 2015 to help out Las Vegas and Binghamton squads badly sapped by the Mets beefing their roster up to 37. He didn't do much to help as Vegas tanked down the stretch, losing a solid lead in the standings and failing to qualify for the playoffs on the last day.

He joined other unsigned vets in Tokyo and Hong Kong this offseason for the Premier12 World Baseball Tournament. The US took silver.

Vic Black, who surprisingly said goodbye to New York without having secured a job with another team, has seemingly clarified his situation by undergoing shoulder surgery. I suspect the next time we see him will be with an independent league team.

We’ll keep him and the rest of our dangling minor league free agents around until the end of spring. But hey, look, Brooks Conrad found a job!

Logan Verrett gets punched into the grid in the bullpen, as he's the last pitcher in camp available for that slot who is on the 40-man roster. But with Tejada's release, there's an open roster spot, so the Hendersons of the world need not despair utterly.

And speaking of Tejada's release, the only available infielder left in camp and on the roster is Eric Campbell. So my dream of a boo-free opening day may not come to pass after all.

Ricardo "Ricky" Jacquez was a highly effective reliever for Kingsport in 2013 (30 strikeouts and a 1.74 ERA in 20 1/3 innings, with a fastball touching 97), but hadn't pitched since then. His 2015 season was knocked aside by a drug violation (it was his second, but I believe it was his first suspension).

He was also kicked off the University of Texas baseball team for numerous unspecified violations, so he's not tumbling in the right direction, and I imagine the Mets were lucky to get whatever change they got for him.

Surprised they decide to essentially go with a 24-man roster the first two days and sort of taxi-squad the suspended Robles. But wars of attrition don't tend to happen under American League rules.

Also surprised the carried Eric Campbell as the sixth-infielder over a defense-first option, considering they're generally profiling as a defensively lackluster team.

We missed this from a couple of days ago, but the Mets have found the big league vet backup catcher they were looking for through spring training. They're assigning him to Vegas for now, but if they ever get concerned that Plawecki is stagnating on the bench, they can send him down for a few weeks and call on René.

Rivera previously collected a Wilpon paycheck back in 2009, spending the full season with the Buffalo Bisons.

No transaction announcement yet, but Rafael Montero is reportedly en route to join the team, presumably stepping in for a paternity-leavin' Jacob deGrom.

As noted in the Las Vegas thread, Montero went five innings in the 51s' opener, yielding three hits and two walks, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five guys.

Also it's freaking April and they've barely played and have another off day on Thursday. They'll manage to get 9 innings out of these guys. Some of these guys have options, so if the Mets really felt pressed hey could just send Robles down for a bit and promote Montero and recall him instantly should deGrom need the DL. It's fine.

I don't go for this 13-man pitching staff nonsense. For one, the pen isn't particularly gassed. For two, the short bench already caught up with the team by inning six of the first game, when Alejandro de Aza had to go up there and pinch-hit against Clayton Kershaw, a tough draw for anybody, but simply unfair for a left-handed bench player.
