I don't hold out hope that Utley will receive any punishment because it would require MLB to admit that the umps not only missed the call on field but that they totally fucked up the video review as well. I expect a lot of CYA and a "solution" that somehow makes things worse.

They inexplicably suspended Roger Clemens the next year for behavior that didn't get him ejected from the 2000 World Series.

I'm confounded that Terry, like Valentine before him, shrunk from making his case on the field.

Yes, that didn't occur to me as events were unfolding, because I was more interested in the events that were unfolding, but in retrospect Terry seemed to have accepted all this rather timidly. I don't know that a full-scale freakout would have changed anything, but he appears to have shrugged it off.

I didn't watch any of the post-game coverage, so I don't know what Terry may have said. I also think I'm going to pass on SNY's playoff show tonight. The best thing for my sanity is to try to ignore Mets news coverage as much as possible until it's time for Monday's game.

Terry handled the situation with all the gumption of a deer in headlights.

Suspend him?
As they used to say in the old western movies, "Shootin's too good fer him".

Terry is a little old man and the action was out of a Fast and Furious movie. Terry was intellectually paralyzed.

Terry may be one of the older(est) managers in the game but I think
he could probably kick more than a few of our asses if pushed. The focus
should be on what's Utley's punishment, not on if Collins should have thrown
a fit and get run from the game.

I don't think that at all. As I said, Bobby Valentine did no better, and nobody thought of him as too old or too timid or intellectually wanting.

Managers are willing to get tossed because they recognize a moral victory for tomorrow and tomorrow's tomorrow can happen in a setback today. But they rarely are willing to get tossed or risk getting tossed in the post-season, because tomorrows are in short supply and today is far more important.

The problem is that they over-rate their own importance to today's cause, and don't think they can be more valuable to their team as martyrs than as strategists.

That said, now that I've seen Bob Geren in action, he's left me scratching my head more than Terry does.

I also don't think that the action was anything resembling a Fast and Furious movie. I'm not sure what would make you say that. With the trainers looking after Tejada, Tejada ultimately being carted off the field, the video review, and the summoning of Utley from the dugout, it was 20 minutes of standing around.

I don't think Collins should have thrown a fit. I do think he should have found a way to press his case.

I could care less what kind of suspension or fine, if any, Utley gets -- unless he's suspended from the NLDs and the Dodgers are not allowed to fill his spot. 'Cause then, the Mets would gain a tactical advantage from all of this. Otherwise, why the hell would I care if Utley's fined some sum of money that he could pay as easily as most other people could pay for a slice of pizza?

And the more I think of the play, I'm not even angry with Utley. He did what most players in his position would've done and I believe him when he says he didn't intend to inflict the kind of harm that actually resulted. I think the call was lousy because Utley's slide was illegal, but my gripe is with the umpires, who should've called interference, but didn't.

I totally agree with this. It was a late slide but he could have reached the bag from what I've seen and his intention was old school break up the DP. Yes, an ump could have and probably should have called it interference and a DP, we've seen it done, and MOST CERTAINLY the umpbraincentral never should have reversed the initial out call.

Utley's like one of my nemesis's, I hate what he does to the Mets, so I'd love to call him all kinds of things, but I can't jump on the headhunting bandwagon. If Muffy made a better throw, if T didn't go the back turned route (although I suppose that would mean not go for the DP-which I commend him for), these things plus the lateness of Utley's slide made it go south. Chase might have been surprised that Tejada was going to go for two, considering how late the throw got to second. But, in my book, he was well within his bounds to try and "put body" on Tejada.

Does baseball want to remove the take out slide at second? Make it a more cushy thing? Why don't we throw a pile of pillows out there and make it a better experience.

The ump there could have said, hey! To extreme! Your out!-Your out! But he didnt. At at that point I was thinking okay, at least we got the force...that was huge.

And then we didn't have the force.

I put this ALL on the umps.
