Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Well, I was right about him going to Florida. I just had the wrong team and position.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 and as we know ,Bud Black to the Nats
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Wow, I'm trying to respect these professional dudes and all, but I'm thrilled with both of those moves.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I thought that these announcements weren't supposed to occur during the World Series?Or is there some exemption for tweets?

It was on the third tablet. Ask Mel Brooks.Back to the thread.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Donnie is going to discover that it's very different to manage with a $300 million payroll and then with the Marlins.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 But I'm guessing there are more ex-MFY fans in Miami and environs than there are in L.A. They'll remember, and treat him fondly.Later

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Bochy, Hale, Terry,Ventura, Andy Green. That's at least 5 managers with Mets connections. Who else?

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Not specifically manager related, but Alex Anthopolous will not return as Toronto GM
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Wow, that's a tough break. They won a tough-assed division that was totally up-for-grabs at mid-season. But man, they paid for it, and turning the burden of the Jos Reyes deal into the triple burden of the the Troy Tulowitzki package was a hell of a last-minute addition to the ongoing payroll heft.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Apparently Anthopolous was offered a five year extension but turned it down. But the writing for this has been on the wall since the Jays hired former Injun exec Mark Shapiro (the guy depicted as talking trades with Beane/Pitt in the early scenes of MONEYBALL) as team president in August. But, yeah, after years of finishing 3rd behind the Yanx/Sawx blockade, then trying big stuff but never busting to the top of that division (the Dickey trade, the Reyes/Buehrle deal) he finally does break through this season and it turns out to be his last. And all this on the day that Anthopolous was named AL executive of the year.I suspect he won't be out of work long.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 So apparently the Nationals didn't say they were hiring Black, man. What they meant is that they're hiring the black man.Amid rumors of not being able to come to terms with presumed managerial hire Bud Black (lousy cheap-ass owners!) those talks ended and the team is apparently confirming the story making the rounds that they will take on Dusty Baker as their next dugout skipper. If true, Terry would still retain his title as MLB's oldest manager as Baker clocks in at three weeks younger.

I've read it and I can't tell who the manager or candidate is to be the manager. Clear as mud.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 WASHINGTON -- Dusty Baker agreed to a multiyear deal to become the Nationals' new manager on Tuesday."We were looking for a manager to help us achieve our ultimate goal of competing for a World Series championship," said Nationals owner Ted Lerner. "During our broad search process, we met with many qualified candidates, and ultimately, it was clear that Dusty's deep experience was the best fit for our ballclub."Last week, sources said that Bud Black was the club's choice to replace Matt Williams. But multiple reports on Monday night indicated that negotiations between Washington and Black had either cooled or broken off entirely.Heavens to Mergatroid. He will demolish that pitching staff.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 I think about that also, but I was always curious how much we make assumptions about that. We get extreme results like Prior and Wood, and then we follow the breadcrumbs backward to hang their injuries on Baker. But how much of that is coincidence and how much is causality? And are we selecting data to get the result we want?Obviously, the Mets obsess over the health of young pitchers, but here we are, with Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and Wheeler, all with surgically repaired arms. Maybe Baker is to blame, but humility suggests we need to dig further. Here's an old point-coutnerpoint article about Baker: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/354126-does-dusty-baker-abuse-pitchersWhat's interesting is to look at "Well, we'll see" cases they bring up back in 2010 Homer Bailey and such from the 2015 perspective.
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Does this mean that the Nationals get Darren Baker and J.T. Snow too?
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Oh goody! Now that my gag reflex has almost fully recovered, we will again be treated of those close-up shots of Dusty spitting whichever seeds he has always chewed out onto the dugout floor. Why have the TV directors felt the need to show that to us every time they televise a game in which Dusty is managing?Disgusting.Later

Hell, let's hit other points from the template. Sandy Alderson was "forced" on the Mets. Let's say Dusty Baker was forced on the Nationals. Certainly there were stories this past month about how the number of minority managers in MLB was unacceptably low.

Yost signed and extension through 2016 before the season maybe a bad move in retrospect. So I got vacancies in Los Angeles and San Diego with Fredi Gonzalez possibly still twisting in the wind in Atlanta(?).

Vida Blue? ... Roy White?)This oversight is probably due to the fact that I rarely think about the San Diego Padres and have never heard of Andy Green. Apparently he was the bench coach in Arizona recently. I'll take their word for it.That makes next year's slate complete. Or at least it does until the first firing but that probably won't happen prior to opening day.
