GAME: New York Mets (89-69) at Philadelphia Phillies (61-97)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 01 - 12:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
Covers Media Group, Ltd.

It was a bad night in the standings and a worse one on the injury front for the New York Mets, who will try to avert a three-game sweep against the host Philadelphia Phillies in Thursday afternoon's series finale. New York coughed up a five-run lead in Wednesday's 7-5 loss, a defeat compounded when center fielder Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Wilmer Flores were forced to exit the game early.

The Mets maintained a one-game edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the No. 2 seed in the National League and home-field advantage in the Division Series. Cespedes was hit with a pitch on his left hand and suffered bruises to his middle and ring finger while Flores left the game with lower back stiffness. In addition, left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, leaving rookie Sean Gilmartin to make his first start of the season. The Phillies are seeking their fourth consecutive victory after ending New York's streak of nine consecutive series wins against them.

TV: 12:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Sean Gilmartin (3-1, 2.58 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (2-3, 3.07)

Gilmartin has made 49 relief appearances this season but hasn't pitched more than two innings since Aug. 24 at Philadelphia, when he tossed 3 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing three hits and striking out four. He came back three days later against the Phillies and struck out three in 1 2/3 hitless innings. Gilmartin will be followed to the mound by reliever Tim Stauffer, who has allowed five runs in his last four appearances.

Eickhoff, acquired in the deal that sent Cole Hamels to Texas, gave up three runs in seven innings in a loss to the Mets on Aug. 31 but is closing the season on a roll. The 25-year-old Eickhoff ended a five-start winless drought last time out with seven innings of two-run ball against Washington while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. It was the third consecutive seven-inning outing by Eickhoff, who has allowed three runs in that span.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets manager Terry Collins said Cespedes is "OK" but he is planning on resting several starters in the series finale.
2. Phillies SS Freddy Galvis is 6-for-12 with four RBIs and five runs scored in his last three games.
3. Matz, who is dealing with muscles spasms, is expected to pitch this weekend.

That oughta get them Phillies shaking in their boots!

so when Terry said he planned to rest several starters he meant "all the starters", i'm pretty ok with not giving the phillies anyone worth hitting with another pitch

Let's hope there isn't ten R's in that lineup.

Too bad the Phils traded Ben Revere. They could have had an even r-ier lineup.

On every fly ball the Phils booth says: "The wind will keep that one in the ballpark."

These fly outs didn't even make the warning track and had no intention of leaving the yard.

*hurl

One additional reason I was glad that the Mets clinched in Cincinnati was because I was able to see the SNY coverage. (Not on Extra Innings, unfortunately, but on MLB.tv.) When the Mets play the Phillies, I'm stuck with the Philadelphia coverage. Maybe next season I'll experiment with some of that software that allows you to spoof your IP address. If I can make it look like I'm in some other market (other than Philadelphia or New York) then maybe I can pick up the Mets coverage for Mets-Phillies games on MLB.tv.

Gilmartin breaking Eric Goeddel's little heart with three innings of no-hit ball so far.

Terry may just say "I ain't departin' without Gilmartin!"

There goes the no-hitter. I don't want Gilmartin pitching any more than 3.2 innings in the playoffs.

Are you legitimately blocked? When I first got MLBtv they were blocking Phils games (rightly so-I have comcast and they show Phils) which I expected, but they also blocked Balt, Wash, Pitts. I had to call them and say- make a choice, you can't be blocking me for all three. Since then I'm only blocked for the Phils. Like I said, I get Phils thru comcast, so I can see the games, but for those other cities I had no recourse.

Shit. Ruff wants to be my new Phils nemesis.

Huh, I was just typing that Gilmartin is looking rather formidable
this early afternoon.

Yes, I'm legitimately blocked from the SNY telecasts of Mets-Phillies games. I live in the Philadelphia suburbs and Comcast has exclusive area rights to Phillies games. I can't get the Phillies on MLB.tv or Extra Innings; I can only watch the local telecasts. But if I was able to spoof my IP address to make it look like I live in Sacramento or Boise or somewhere like that, I should be able to watch the Phillies as if they were an out-of-town team. I could watch the opposing team's broadcasts for all Phillies games, although I only care about the 19 games where they play the Mets.

Since the Phils booth could drive one to commit murder I support your lesser offense, although it might be easier to get away with murder.

Just checked the box score, not watching the game.
Terry double switches Conforto out of a game in which they are being shut out so he can put YOUNG in the game?
Why not just replace the pitcher when appropriate and keep Conforto in the game?

Somebody had better remind him that the home field advantage is still in play.

You hear that guy yelling at Newy?

YOU GOT 4 HOME RUNS! YOU GOT 14 RBI!

And Kirk drills one into the gap for a double.
Lets go Mets!

I really think that the expanded roster is enabling overmanaging on Terry's part.

Jeeze. We are gonna get swept by the Phils. The way this season has gone I should not be surprised.

The leave healthy goal is still within reach.

Anyhow, the team has a history of getting swept by the Phils down the stretch in otherwise distinguished seasons.
