Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 If nothing else, 9.5 with 18 remaining is a better cushion than 7 with 17 -- as is not having any potential crushing head-to-head sweeps until it's almost certainly going to be too late to matter. In 2007 that 7/17 lead following a Wednesday game against the Braves was, by Sunday afternoon, down to a much more precarious 3.5/14 after an off-day where the Phils won then the three game sweep by the Phils.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 I would have updated this earlier, but it's been a busy day. Although, I suppose if the update were a happier one I would have found the time.Yesterday was the second bad day in a row. (It's still too early to worry, I say worriedly.) The Nationals won and the Mets lost. The division lead drops to 7.5 games. The magic number remains at 10. And the NHOP rises above the .300 mark, from .286 to .303.Remember how happy we were when the lead got to 7 games after the Mets finished up in Washington? We figured the division was all but clinched. Well, right now the lead is a half game larger than it was then, the magic number has dropped by 7, and the NHOP has declined .063 points. So, despite the anguish of the last two days, The Mets are still in better shape now than they were then. The next few days have the potential to be bumpy. The Mets play a three-game series against the Yankees in Queens while the Nationals host the Marlins for four games. I'm going to set a rather pessimistic "goal": If the Mets have a 6-game lead on Monday morning after all this is done, the magic number will be 8, with each team having 13 games remaining. (The NHOP would be .308, slightly higher than it is now.) But the Mets schedule would be rather easy for the next ten games, and over that period they should be able to get the magic number down to zero.If the Mets have a lead of more than 6 games on Monday morning, all the better. If the Mets, for example, take two of three from the Yankees and the Nationals split with the Marlins, the lead will be 8 games, and the magic number will be a mere 6. Let's see what happens!DateMets RecordNationals RecordMets LeadMagic NumberGames RemainingNHOPAugust 356-5054-501571140.500August 457-5055-501561120.500August 558-5055-512541100.491August 658-5056-511.5541090.495August 759-5056-522.5521070.486August 859-5157-521.5521050.495August 959-5257-531.5511030.495August 1060-5258-531.5501010.495August 1161-5258-542.548990.485August 1262-5258-553.546970.474August 1363-5258-564.544950.463August 1463-5358-574.543930.462August 1563-5458-584.542910.462August 1663-5558-594.541890.461August 1763-5558-594.541890.461August 1864-5559-594.540870.460August 1964-5660-593.540850.471August 2064-5660-60439840.464August 2165-5660-61537820.451August 2266-5661-61536800.450August 2367-5662-61535780.449August 2468-5662-615.534770.442August 2569-5663-615.533750.440August 2670-5663-626.531730.425August 2771-5664-626.530710.423August 2871-5764-636.529690.420August 2971-5865-635.529670.433August 3072-5866-635.528650.431August 3173-5866-646.526630.413September 173-5966-656.525610.410September 274-5967-656.524590.407September 374-5968-65624580.414September 474-6069-65524560.429September 575-6070-65523540.426September 675-6171-65423520.442September 776-6171-66521500.420September 877-6171-67619480.396September 978-6171-68717460.370September 1079-6171-687.516450.356September 1180-6171-698.514430.326September 1281-6171-709.512410.293September 1382-6172-709.511390.282September 1483-6173-709.510370.270September 1583-6274-708.510350.286September 1683-6375-707.510330.303Upcoming schedule for Mets and Nationals:MetsNationalsSeptember 17MiamiSeptember 18New York (AL)MiamiSeptember 19New York (AL)MiamiSeptember 20New York (AL)MiamiSeptember 21AtlantaBaltimoreSeptember 22AtlantaBaltimoreSeptember 23AtlantaBaltimoreSeptember 24At CincinnatiSeptember 25At CincinnatiPhiladelphiaSeptember 26At CincinnatiPhiladelphiaSeptember 27At CincinnatiPhiladelphiaSeptember 28CincinnatiSeptember 29At PhiladelphiaAt AtlantaSeptember 30At PhiladelphiaAt AtlantaOctober 1At PhiladelphiaAt AtlantaOctober 2WashingtonAt MetsOctober 3WashingtonAt MetsOctober 4WashingtonAt Mets
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 All of a sudden, that draw looks tougher for the Mets.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 I wish we could just get this all over and go straight to the postseason.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Or cancel the post-season and call the Mets "Super Champions" if we can hold out and win the division. Most of the heavy lifting is done that way.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Another way to look at this is that there are 27 games in total (Mets + Nats combined) prior to the three-game, season-ending, head-to-head series. 14 for the Nats, 13 for the Mets.Ideally you'd like to be at least 4 up when that series starts to erase even the possibility of a disaster as there'll be no outside help possible once that series starts. The magic number for that scenario is still 10 but it means that a higher percentage of those non h-t-h games will have to go our way (37% - or right about 3 games out of every 8) in order to make that final series meaningless. That's really the number to shoot for.For a slightly less dark take on things, even if the Nats win tonight while we're idle it would still put us in a one game better situation than in 2007: 7 up with 16 to play. And with the h-t-h series coming at the end of the season, the magic number is unlikely to crash as quickly as it did back then. The problem with '07 is that the Phils won on a night when we were idle to make it 6.5/17 and then came the sweep. The result was that barely 72 hours after the lead was sitting at 7/17 it was suddenly a much more precarious 3.5/14. The magic number went nowhere while the lead was being chopped in half.In this case, with two separate series going on, even a sweep by them can't ensure a sweep against us so the MN is likely to be smaller by the end of the weekend and the lead larger than it was then even if not as large as it is right now (if that makes any sense). Point is, not only is 3.5/14 impossible but even the worst case scenario (5/14) is highly unlikely to happen.

Which is strange because I told myself I'd be happy with a 5 game lead at the end of the Washington series. Being a fan is, in no way rational.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2015 Author Posted September 18, 2015 For that to happen, we only need two happy outcomes over the six games that will be played in Queens and Washington from Friday to Sunday.[table:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]Happy Outcomes[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]MondayMorningLead[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]MagicNumber[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]0[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]5[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]9[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]1[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]6[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]8[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]2[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]7[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]7[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]3[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]8[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]6[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]4[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]9[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]5[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]5[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]10[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]4[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][tr:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]6[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]11[/td:2axbf3f2][td:2axbf3f2]3[/td:2axbf3f2][/tr:2axbf3f2][/table:2axbf3f2]
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2015 Author Posted September 18, 2015 The Mets beat the Yankees tonight, and the Marlins gave the Nationals a good fight, but the Nationals prevailed. So what could have been a great day is, instead, merely a very very good day. The division lead holds at 8 games. The magic number is reduced from 9 to 8. And now after the opening win, having only a 7 game lead at the end of business on Sunday seems like settling.NHOP for clinching prior to the final series drops to .333 -- which means that if only 1/3 of the next 24 games (12 each) go our way the final series won't matter.Or to look at it from a Nats perspective, they have to have 17 of the 24 games go their way and then sweep the final head to head series and even then all that would do is force a tie which would make them have to finish the season with a four-game set.Damn, I'm starting to like our chances here!!

The column represents the total number of happy outcomes for the period from Friday through Sunday. We already have one happy outcome, and there's still the possibility of four more, which would leave us with a total of five.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 Nothing good to report today, I'm afraid. Yesterday was our second consecutive bad day, with the Mets losing and the Nationals winning. Washington has now won seven of their last eight, and the Mets lead has narrowed to 6 games. The magic number hasn't budged since Friday, remaining at 8. The NHOP rises for the second consecutive day, going from .286 to .308. Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Needing eight in a row to put it to bed would be remarkable, as it would indicate Washington has won eight in a row also.
