And the thing is, interviews like that aren't even all Gelbs' fault. Yeah it was inane, but what are you going to ask a guy early in a game he's not playing?
The main fault lies with station mgmt who hires guys like this because they think they have to (after all, everyone else has one) and then feels obligated to use him to justify the hire. Bottom line is, just because you CAN do something ('hey, we've got the backup catcher cornered - get Gelbs over there quick!!') doesn't always mean it's a good idea.

well, he presumably knew he was going to interview him. I mean, maybe something better than "I know you haven't caught Syndergaard yet, but tell me about him?" ?

Interviewing people is difficult, I can imagine being live and with dumb baseball players as your subject doesn't make it any easier, but the proof is in the pudding: If it's not entertaining and detracts from the game then why do it at all?

Gelbs also needs to develop a sense of humor. Sometimes Kevin would do something absurd, but he'd have fun with it (the bobble head collection in Miami or kayaking in McCovey Cove). Gelbs just paddles in circles, literally and figuratively.

What you be talking about, whether being relevant or being absurd, is a nose for a story.

Gelbs and Mcineny (or whatever his name is) ain't showed much of it yet.

Gelbs after distracting me from following what happened on the Plawecki play forgot his mic was still on and talked over Gary Keith & Ron.

Tonight in Arizona he was eating a churro dog during the broadcast. Not exactly with aplomb.

It was silly, but the booth was silly with him.
(not a Gelbs endorsement)

First time he ever made me laugh, but I was definitely laughing at him, not with him.

Ya know, I'm getting to the point where I pity him. I guess that means I care.
