On the one hand, it's still May, and the Mets are only one game out of first place. On the other hand, the Nationals, the unanimous pre-season choice for baseball's best team, now practically back to full strength, are on a 17-4 tear. True colors? And then there's this:

that they don't see first again.

I wouldn't say it's not possible (or even probable), but with the Mets' heinous hitting, Colon and Niese having multiple bad starts in a row and a Nationals team finally living up to their "on paper" pre-season expectations, there's no way I could call it a 100% guarantee.

Nats, for what it's worth (or werth), aren't really full strength. Fister's out 'til at least mid-June and Werth went down in the Yankee series. Rendon and McLouth haven't reappeared either.

Not that my faith is in National health, but...

That's can't be good for the Mets. Not at full strength and still on a 17-4 tear? Yikes!

Mets reinforcements are arguably closer to returning, and Harper will not hit .500 like he has over the last 14 days.

Well, I meant to refute your notion of "now practically back to full strength." If the Nats being at full strength is bad news for the Mets, and the Nats not being at full strength is bad news for the Mets, I don't know what to say. Bad news for the Mets, I guess.

Very obviously, Werth and Fister had not been out during the duration of that 17-4 stretch.

This Early Bird Edition of Standings, 2015 went to press with the Braves and Brewers tied at 1-1 in the sixth inning in Atlanta.
