Anything can happen, and that's what makes this scary. But pennant races are supposed to be scary, but the fact that it's August 24 and our guts are churning is what makes all this fun. It's much better than the apathy that has settled in by this point over the last six years.

I know. I think the odds are in the Mets favor, but a bad week can change that dramatically. Tonight's game isn't technically a "must win" but it feels like one, and that definitely counts for something.

Well, looks like they nailed it, despite an abysmal deGrom. It was a nice, demoralizing shot across the bow. Let's hope they (the Phillies, that is) lay down a bit now.

You know who this has to be demoralizing for? -- Nats fans.
You can imagine a guy checking out the scores, seeing the early 7-2 score with deGrom unable to last the 3rd inning and figuring that his boys grabbed a half-game while kicking back on an off day.
Then you can imagine the same guy checking in on things a bit later .... "Oh Shit!"

Fortunately for my Nats-rooting cousins, I'm too nice a guy to taunt them right now.
Plus there's that karma shit which may decide to come back and bite me if I did.

It's just such a great thing for a guy like deGrom who has picked the team up time after time to get a pick-up of his own. Totally takes the monkey off his back going down the stretch.

Come. Smell the schadenfreude as the 'Haha, Mets are melting down!' comments turn into 'holy shit!' comments.

How about that one idiot who hoped that all of the violent Mets fans would riot and kill each other?

I noticed one poster in that thread who was a voice of reason, but everyone else was either too cocky or too maudlin.

Aw, that's good reading. I love to see fans of other teams feel the same helplessness, frustration and shame we've ben through.

Jeff Francoeur was claimed off waivers and pulled back by the Phillies.

Allow me to repeat that: Jeff Francoeur was claimed off waivers and pulled back by the Phillies.

The city (the fans, actually) that boo-ed Santa Claus loved Chase Utley:

Of course they would.

Later

I told you guys about how my wife had to deal with the Phils during the '09 season/Series, hospitality-wise, right? Can't find it in the Archives, but, yeah, you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat those who serve them.

That thread does also demonstrate the difference between quality and quantity.

I can't find the thread that I posted in that I had some PhillyPhear. Pay
no attention to the man behind the curtain if anyone reads it.

(still can't believe we marched out of there with four under our belts)

Pete Mackanin: no longer interim. Signed through next year.

I've given this some thought and concluded hiring Interim managers before you give yourself a chance to choose from a wider field is often a mistake.

In the great tradition (magnae traditionis) of Billy Wagner, Jonathan Papelbon leaves Philadelphia and ambiguously talks crap about the guys he left behind.

This is supposed to give Mets fans an erection, right? It's not just me? If it's just me, I can live with that.

I say this same thing to myself every time I watch old episodes of "The Golden Girls."

I agree about not re-upping a guy before the offseason, and I agree about not re-upping Francesa before checking out the field as well.

Why I got the news late, I dunno.

Recently added to the roster: Travis' older brother Chase d'Arnaud.

The Phillies were clearly concerned their Chase factor was getting low.
