MLB has announced that longtime Met Field Maven Pete Flynn has been inducted into the Groundskeeper Hall of Fame. In an accompanying statement, the Mets said, "Seriously? There's a Groundskeeper Hall of Fame? Don't get us wrong. We love and respect Pete to death, but... seriously?"

The announcement was met with near-universal acclaim from Flynn's peers in the industry. Near-universal.

You can tell how great Pete Flynn was by comparing his work at Shea to his successors' work at Citi. IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Edgy, Ha!

My question is why did it take so long?

Pete was given a "Longtime Terrific Service Award" or some such thing they announce for employees supposedly too many degrees removed from the competition to qualify for the Mets Hall. It's the same reward I believe they recognized Bob Mandt and Jane Jarvis with.

The late Jane Jarvis has yet to be honored with the Mets' HOF Achievement Award.

So far its been just
2010 Robert Mandt
2012 Pete Flynn
2013 Roland Hemond

Jane is indeed missing.

But 2013's honoree was scout Harry Minor. Roland Hemond never worked for the Mets. In fact, he gladly took Tom Seaver off our hands in 1984.

What's this I'm reading about Mr Flynn driving the Beatles? Is it true he drove the armored car from the heliport to Shea? This is news to me.

Based on replies to the Mets announcement on FaceBook, Mets' fans are cranky about this. Should surprise no one.
