Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, APRIL 2014The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month and Pitcher of the Month for April 2014 is JONATHON NIESE. This is Niese's fourth time as Pitcher of the Month and first time as Player of the Month. He had the best ERA (2.20) among Mets starters, and had a 2-2 record with 24 strikeouts and 8 walks in 32.2 innings over five starts. The Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is CARLOS TORRES. Carlos pitched in 13 games in April with a 2-0 record and a 1.20 ERA over 15 innings. He struck out 17 batters and walked 6. This is the second time that Torres has received the Schaefer award for the month's best reliever. The Schaefer Mets Bench Player of the Month for April is IKE DAVIS. Ike had been the overall Player of the Month twice, in September 2010 and April 2011, but this is the first time he has won Schaefer coming off the bench. Ike was traded to the Pirates in April, so unless he returns to the Mets some day, this is likely the last Schaefer award that he will win. Ike's win this month was mostly, but not entirely, due to his walk-off grand slam against the Reds on April 5..Updated award winner standings, with this month's winners in bold:PLAYER OF THE MONTHDavid Wright 13Johan Santana 6Carlos Beltran 5Jose Reyes 5R. Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 In a month worth of Noffense it's not surprising that several pitchers would lead the way. I would have guess Gee rather than Niese but it was fairly close. That Duda was the top hitter is more surprising. I probably would have bet on Murphy had I thought about this before seeing the results.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Great cardwork, as usual. But you missed your shot at flexing your O-Pee-Chee chops with Ike. Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 I don't think I've ever seen those cards with the extra text stamped on them. (I also have to confess that I don't know what "O-Pee-Chee" is, although it sounds familiar.)I suppose I could have make a blue-bordered 1972 Ike card showing him in a Pirates uniform with the word TRADED stamped across the image, but the 1979 card I used is one that I've had in my pocket for a couple of years, one that was prepared when he was a strong candidate for Player of the Month. (I'm guessing the second half of 2012, but I'm not sure.)I still have one unused card for a player who's still with the Mets. I'll make it public when he leaves the Mets or wins a Schaefer award.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 A nice swan song for Ike. Joins Murph as only Mets to win Player and Bench Player awards. I'm assuming Murph worked his way up from bench to full-time status in Schaefer terms. Ike went the other way before heading west.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 We should re-name the Shaefer Reliever of the Month Award the Shaefer Brian Stokes Award.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I can't even remember Brian Stokes, despite having taken several photos of him.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 This could have been the year that Bobby Parnell finally knocked Brian Stokes off his perch, but no...I have to suspect that Stokes first messed with Bobby's neck, and then with his arm. Or maybe he hired Tanya Harding to do it.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Wright, Dickey and Stokes all look like locks going into 2015. Hoping that Satin makes a run for the bench player award (or Murphy could get benched and then play well offa the bench).
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Great job BG.I think Lagares would have had a great shot at this had he not gotten hurt.

Other O-Pee-Chee baseball card modifications included French language card backs.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Lucas Duda's pissed and sez it ain't fair -- pitchers have their own pitcher of the month award -- they shouldn't be eligible for player of the month.
