Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Reds-Royals game in Surprise canceled after Aroldis Chapman throws a 99-mph-fastball and it gets lined right back to his face. Chapman collapsed but remained moving while he was being attended to.I've got to think this is going to be a watermark moment in the evolution toward armoring pitchers' heads.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Wow. Could be.Frank Deford has an alternative suggestion: Move the mound back 30 feet.
duan Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 It was horrendous to see. Simply awful.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 I've resisted my curiosity thus far.Reds so far are reporting contusion(s) and lacerations.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (Where's that cliche thread? Oh well)And the batting coach praised the batter for "Just hitting the ball up the middle, like we've been telling him to do".Hope he's OK.Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Surgery today for "facial fractures".Expected to be out of the hospital by Saturday, out six to eight weeks from baseball.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 Yeah, I expected to read the word "fracture" or "fractures" before the day was out. Better facial instead of cranial, I guess.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 it happened so fast, there was nothing to do to stop it. I saw an article on Bryce Florie just a week ago, he wasn't ever the same and remains a vagabond.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Chapman's father was in the stands....

The most horrific part, honestly, is the collective gasp.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (edited) Bruce Beck showed it with fair warning, it was sickening ......I wonder what if any effect this has on him mentally. Edited March 20, 2014 by Guest
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 CBS local just threw it up and went ouch...
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Just saw this. Very scary. A custom card guy named Patrick made this. I like the card & concept. Too soon? Nah. Cards should reflect the game, the more timely the better. Of course it reminds me of Matlack in '73. Just finished colorizing this the night before it happened. Freaky.
