He hit a stunning home run in the home opener and just flipped his bat like he didn't care. That was awesome.

I think the home office missed the memo from the field. Had headquarters known early how this guy was equal parts superlative athlete and supergimmicky popstar nutso, then he wouldn't have ended up spending his pre-game afternoons and post-game late nights in his hotel desperately trying to find Japanese restaurants that delivered, and instead been modeling sequined undershorts in discos, judging exotic pet contests, giving awkwardly accented YOU-CAN-DO-IT-TOO! advice to unpopular teens on Nickolodeon shows, issuing winking denials about his relationship with Monica Bellucci, garnering the adulation that surely would have invigorated his game.

Let him wear goofy collars and alphanumeric-display belt buckles, and then deny it later, betraying him publicly, but totally turning him into cause celebre, a beloved rebel of nonsense pop individuality, with Fred and Steve Phillips playing the big bad heavies and Bobby playing the bemused, at-his-wit's-end mediator. Indulge his bullshit, while pretending to be infuriated by it, in order to motivate him to prove he's not all bullshit.

That, I retroactively say, was the ticket.

The guy is a walking cartoon. No mystery there.

That. He was a caricature, and productive enough for a very likable, if flawed, 2001 team. We loved rooting for him.

I liked the wristbands.

When my son was 6, he thought he was the coolest player ever, and we got him a #5 Shinjo shirt that he wore everywhere. He tried hopping when he would catch a ball. For him, it did not work.

Still have that shirt up in the attic someplace.
